Dear Community,
yesterday unfortunately my FP4 fell down from the car seat (shotgun) and hit the floor mat. First I thought, just the back cover opened, but then I realised that it was the display that was not in place anymore and the cable that links it to the core was cut in two. What can I do now. It is still live and I’ve connected a charging cable to keep it that way - on my computer the WhatsApp client is still active etc… Ofc, I cannot start a WhatsApp chat backup from the desktop client, neither can I access any data (photos etc.), as I need to unlock it with the fingerprint sensor (it still reacts!), but then ofc I can’t tap “file transfer” when it comes to the USB connection settings… Is there any way to save anything? My favourite option would be, go to a repair shop that is specialised in repairing fairphones, so after an hour or two, I can just start where I left and no data, no factory reset etc was performed. Do you think that this is realistic? Can you recommend any repair shop either located in the German area of Northern Hesse (Kassel, Homberg/Efze, Bebra) or in the Rhine-Ruhr area (Dortmund, Bochum, Essen, Duisburg, Düsseldorf, Cologne)? Would be glad to receive some good hints, thanks in advance!
Michael
P.S.: Last night I already opened a customer service ticket and I took a picture of the damage with my work phone.
you can order a new display from the Fairphone online store and repair it yourself. here’s the official guide so that you can gauge whether it’s something you’d be able to follow: Replace the Display | HOW TO FAIRPHONE 4
From my point of view the screen has a design flaw.
Hi, it looks to me that this won’t solve it. The display replacement step by step guide clearly says, make sure the cable stays intact, and as you can see in the picture I’ve included, the broken cable is the problem. That’s what I learn from it - if you order a new screen, there’s no cable included, because it’s maybe part of the core unit?! Maybe the screen itself is still working even, I just can’t check it …
The new screen comes with the cable connected. Just plug it into the B2B-connector gently and you are done.
Why this is important
Okay, thanks to fpbonn and yvmuell for this information. I will order a replacement display right now then and hope it’ll arrive shortly.
Of you have a USB-C docking station you may connect it if you’re lucky you’ll have a keyboard and screen then to control the phone.
