Auto screen brightness doesn't work in low light again

i was already typing that it did fix the issue permanently.

only still experience issues, like the old constantly jumping up and down in very specific lighting (bit dark room and a light window behind me for example).
the screen being to bright anyway (settings telling 0).

meanwhile its much better than before the reset…

… decided als we speek to test again, and turned of all the lights, im sure my phone was still going to 0 before, i think it was yesterday i dit checked it last time.
now it stuk on 33%, pushing it back, 0 again. lock and un lock. still 0 oke fine nice nothing wrong. 10 sec. an beemd bak to 33 in one stap…

and dit the reset again and its 0 again :slightly_smiling_face:.

long story short the problem dit come back after 2 weeks.

repeating te reset solved it again.

will see how long it will take from now on.

Yes, please contactsupport they prioritize issues based on the incoming tickets. FP6 might be worked on in the near future, so usually that could mean that the older models become less of a priority. So the best time to report it is now.

Unfortunately, the issue returned after a few hours of usage.

The phenomena, T4om observed (jumping brightness) also occured for me: Using the FP for navigation in my car at night, the brightness started to “jump” whenever the slightest brightness changes occur.

First idea was to create a task with tasker, which deletes the adaptive brightness settings every few hours. Due to a lack of knowledge, I discarded that idea.

Second guess: I am trying this (slightly old) app GitHub - Android Auto Brightness

Hi @aze

Does the app you shared the trick for you?

greetings

Tom

Hi @T4om ,
sorry for the late response.
Recently the app did not prove as reliable/usable, as I thought:

  • Max Brightness was never achieved (automatically) even when in the brightest sun
  • Max Brightness was reduced, when pulled up manually (annoying when using the phone to navigate with a car)
  • Min Brightness frequently got to 28% (could be easily reset by the Auto Brightness app)

After uninstalling, the native auto brightness somehow worked better.
In total darkness the min brightness still occasionaly gets to 28%

For summer, the bugs of the native auto brightness do not outwheigh those of the dedicated app.

someone noticed some difference since the last update to android 15?

greetings,

Tom

No chances, unfortunately.

Can confirm. If the screen brightness is set to automatic and you adjust the brightness manually once, the screen will then have a brightness of between 5-30% in a 100% dark room. Even if I then manually reset the automatic brightness to 0%, nothing ever changes again; the screen brightness is never automatically set to 0% again.

In Android 14, there was still a way to fix this, but in Android 15, I haven’t found a solution yet.

@all having issues can you reset the settings? I dont face issues, for me there is no difference

Your mentioned settings app “Device Health Services” didn’t exist under Android 15.

No it’s disappeared.
However I just deleted data for “Digital Wellbeing” and that affected the display immediately.

P.S. - opened the phone again and brightness jumped again … this is a real nuisance. Will add my ticket to the collection …

Edit - Looking at this more closely. In stable fairly low indoors natural light. Each time the screen gets turned on, it initially uses the brightness level it had just before it last turned off, but systematically after exactly 5 s. jumps to a higher brightness 50%. After bringing it down again it seems to be more stable, until the next time the screen is turned on again.
This basically means that I have to correct the brightness every time the screen turns on. This almost defeats the point of Adaptive brightness.

Deleting data for “digital wellbeing” is nothing I want to do.. I have some settings there that I don’t want to lose and it would be annoying to re-set them

It looks like to me that the behaviour of the automatic brightness a little changed after the FP5.VT28.C.042.20250623 update.

Someone else noticed this?
Ore this is just happening on my phone?

its more like jumping up and down it will go back to 0 sometimes, sometimes. i dont noticed the memory issue like before.

for me this is even more ignoring than before.

i have to turn of the automatic brightness now unless i like my phone to act like a slow disco ligt.

Hi,

i still struggling a lot with this issue.

i try to get some information wat causes the issue.

it is difficult to induce it artificially, wel it happens very often on its one.

wat i experience onder FP5.VT2D.C.054.20250814,

yes the behaviour dit change a lot on my phone some time ago.

the auto brightness is using the the full scale. and not longer skipping the lower numbers.

But sometimes the screen start flashing. the flash is slow. 1 or 2 times a second. and jumping from 0% to 50%

it normally happens in low light conditions.

i dit make this screen recording, this is not the flashing issue. but i think its related to the same problem.

i think wat happens here is the with color of the Fairphone support app trigger the sensor.

the black drop down menu trigger the sensor again.

making the brightness going up and down in staps.

During the screen recording. no surrounding licht changes, and i dont move the settings. this is the phone changing the setting on its one.

i wondering how many have this issue.

can you please reply if you do or dont have issues with the auto brightness?

And i wonder if ther are more tests inside the test tool how can be useful/related to this issue?

Dit somone get a resend reply from Fairphone seport about this issue?

Greetings

Tom

Hi,

Fairphone is clearly working on this issue, its getting slowly (very slowly) better and better, (my opinion, i still see nieuw complaints in different topics).

At this point i like to mark this issue as solved for the Fairphone 5, yes its still not perfect. and still hope Fairphone will continue improving the habits of the automatic screen brightness.

For me its not longer doing ridiculous brightness changes. just al little help now ant then. moving my finger away from the sensor. or pushing the brightness a bit up or down is not ignoring me a lot.

Thank you Fairphone for the effort and solutions,

I’m wondering wat the opinion is of other Fairphone 5 Users?

greetings

Tom

P.s. im on FP5.VT2E.C.059.20250908, not yet hade the change to download the new update on wifi. I’m on a paid network.
