Android Auto: Low framerate when phone display is turned off

So…Android Auto works perfectly while the Fairphone display is awake (turned on). Once I turn it off or it turns off itself after a while, the framerate of the car display drops below being usable (around 2-5 fps). When I turn the phone display back on, everything is back to being butter smooth and normal. This happens in both connection modes, wired and wireless.

Is there any known solution to that?

PS. Headunit is Ford Tourneo 2024 (same as Volkswagen Caddy 2024) and is known to work with a Pixel 7 without any issues.

I’ve been using Android Auto with a FP6 and a Toyota from 2019. I don’t have the same problem when the screen is turned off / locked.
I checked the settings, and in the Android Auto app settings under “App battery usage” you can enable “Allow background usage”. Not sure if that would make a difference, but it might be worth a try to check this setting.

Hey, thanks @roelj!

That was among the 1st things I’ve tried but unfortunately that did not solve the problem. But thanks for chiming in.

Do you use a screensaver by any chance?
And are you connected via WiFi or USB?

For me (on /e/OS) it works fine. Side-note: USB causes a low frame-rate in general due to the slow USB2-standard.

I’m running Android 15, I’d like to try /e/OS but the sometimes flakey banking app support is a no-go for me.

I don’t know what causes this but I cannot seem to fix it. I’m still not ready to factory reset the thing and run a new setup….but atm it seems like the only thing I’ve not tried yet….

Don’t bother trying /e/OS, it doesn’t have Android Auto-stubs, without them AA doesn’t work in general. The reason it works for me is because I am rooted and installed them myself.

I did a quick search and the most common issue seems to be an active screensaver for some reason. Did you check that yet?

Yeah, just tried. Unfortunately no change. Even if I start the car with the phone screen off, it seems to work but quickly drops to 5ish fps….

FP6.QREL.15.148.0 seems to have solved all the issues. So it was the display driver after all…:man_shrugging:

Also: it’s the 1st time auto-brightness is usable for me at all.

At the moment, everything seems to be working :+1:
