Ok, in the end this worked (using a sim from Telenet). No issues when switching to Proximus after that … would be kind of weird: a phone that works on one provider (or 2) but not another. The GSM standards are expected to be honored everywhere, so I’m still having difficulties accepting this logic
For completeness: I got a reply from Fairphone but nothing usefull (except: try again in a couple of days or try without (e-)sim …). I never encountered this with any other phone, so currently this is a downer.
Anyway: on the latest android now, so we’ll see what has improved now
So why are provider doing all those tests then?
And I never encountered this on a Fairphone with my provider and both is just anecdotal and does not prove it cant happen.
Simply searching the internet for a moment when something seems weird or seemingly defies logic is not a thing anymore .
To be fair, when someone googles an issue, forums like this very place are what come up as results. So we could be a bit more helpful in that regard. There’s no stupid question. Drop the sarcasm PLEASE.
Also, in my eyes this delayed update issue is a super new problem. I used to own phones that absolutely never got updates. Or they got like one the entire time I owned them. And it was simply a weird surprise to see the notification.
With Fairphone, this monthly regular update cycle is super new. It’s weird to get updates on a schedule, and not just get it whenever. Which funnily enough does bring to light how long it takes to push an update out the door.
But I guess back in my day I was petering HTC and their forums about the KitKat update for the M8, which was due for over a year at that point.
Though this may be a bit of an apples to oranges example, since back then it was a matter of HTC developing the update in the first place, while here it’s the development of the monthly patches AND getting the update through carriers. Obstacles upon obstacles.
I’m not saying Fairphone’s speed is the best, but they are still pretty okay at releasing something monthly. And once they release it, I consider their job done. They can’t control what carriers do. Right?
Thank you for coming to my ted talk.
Nobody said there are stupid questions.
We pointed out how this works with references, among them an explanation by a provider.
While it is the right approach to not blindly accept what random people on the internet have to say to anything, just doubling down on a stance without simply and quickly looking whether the info given by others might check out so far doesn’t cut it for me. I don’t like this asymmetry in effort, which is visible all over the internet.
I apologise in case I simply misunderstood, and I apologise for the tone if I came across too harshly.
If you opened a support ticket for this issue before, make sure to reply with how you solved it so that they can track it down!
My fairphone 5 has not received any updates since the last one on June 5, 2024 with Android 13. I am on stock firmware, not rooted, I am in Belgium with Proximus but I can change operators. Is it normal that on October 13, 2024, I still have “no update” ???
Thats a Proximus only issue. I dont know if anyone contacted support and received a respone about the reason.
Thanks a lot !
I switch to my professional Orange SIM card and I instantly got the offer to get the update! I’m still going to contact Proximus, I’m not sure I’ll get future updates and I’m not going to keep switching my SIM card just to get them…
I have the same problem I hope they will fix it.
I’m confused though… Proximus sells Fairphones… They are a partner of Fairphone… Does Fairphone not have contacts that can figure this out?
Android 15 is out and we’re still stuck on android 13 with a last security update from June and a last play store update from 1 february…
OK, so I reached out to proximus business support, here’s my convo, translated to english:
origin dutch chat: https://imgur.com/a/XcSVFgL
Me:
Hello, Fairphone released an Android 14 update for their Fairphone 5 months ago, but it is still not available on devices SPECIFICALLY on the Proximus network. Why is this? [forum.fairphone.com link] I’m not the only one; as you can see, one of the other users temporarily inserted an Orange SIM card into their phone and received the update immediately. Fairphone says the issue isn’t on their end but on yours.
Proximus Helpdesk:
Welcome, I’m taking over this chat from my colleague. I’m Patrick. I’ll read through the chat history—one moment, please.
The delay of the Android 14 update on Fairphone 5 devices with a Proximus SIM is because Proximus needs to test the update for network compatibility first. This can take more time compared to other providers. Do you have any other questions?
Me:
It’s not normal that it’s taking SO long, especially for a phone that YOU even sell yourselves. The update has been available since July 15th (and I believe it was even available in a test phase before that).
Proximus Helpdesk:
Fairphone conducts these tests together with providers to ensure that the update works stably and without issues on their networks. Unfortunately, this process can take longer on certain networks, like ours—Proximus.
Me:
I’m not really satisfied as a Proximus customer with a device bought from Proximus, I have to admit. It would also help if there was some transparency because there are several frustrated customers on that forum post. For example, a reason why the testing is taking so long.
(No criticism of you, criticism of Proximus.)
Proximus Helpdesk:
We, as end users, are powerless in this.
Me:
If possible, please pass this on to the internal department that this is still the case. Maybe it has fallen off someone’s to-do list or something. I don’t know.
Proximus Helpdesk:
I will forward your request to the appropriate internal department so they can check if this issue is on their radar. It indeed seems like something that requires attention since multiple users are reporting this. Let me know if I can help further!
Did you contcat Fairphone to ask them? We here (other user) cant really say anything
The replies by Proximus helpdesk sound like generated by ChatGPT.
I honestly don’t think it is. It feels like a real person. But still a non answer.
Am contacting fairphone itself and linking to this thread.
We’ll have to wait a bit…
Our current reply time is about 10-12 working days. We thank you in advance for your patience!
I don’t know … are they doing tests at all? I have someone with very good connections at Proximus, he never heard of this. And proximus being behind 3 months in their tests with Telenet while after my little trick & switch I never encountered any issue so far. So I do wonder if tests actually happen …
I did contact Fairphone too (twice). Their first suggestion (after 2 weeks of no reaction) was to wait it out, it should get fixed in a “couple of days”. 6 weeks later (end of sept or so), I opened another ticket. They said to try and disable the e-sim, reboot the phone and check the update via wifi (of course this didn’t work) and otherwise wait since it should be fixed “in a couple of days”. So no, fairphone support was friendly but not able to help as well.
I can see it is a combo of phone+provider issue (since it worked when I switched to Telenet), but besides the fact that you can buy a phone with android 14 preinstalled and just later on switch to proximus is an indication that it is not really an android version thing. Proximus needs to follow the GSM standards as well, so as an ex-kernel phone dev-guy I’m pretty curious as to which tests take so long for android 14 just for fairphone … And yes, I realize nobody here can answer that
Yeah, forget about getting the update “soon” or at all, even regular updates stopped it seems (iirc the last one was in June). I switched to Telenet, got the update, switched back and no issues at all.
