Hum … so I need to find another provider in Belgium that already approved this then? And then find someone with that provider … but: I have an e-sim, what would happen if I insert a regular sim?
If you have an e-sim, you can try to temporarily disable it in the phone settings (don’t remove it, just disable it), turn off the phone, put your friend’s SIM card in the tray, turn the phone back on and search for the update.
Otherwise, the “clean way” to do it is to open a support ticket with your SIM provider to let them know that you and other people are waiting on the update.
Following that logic, no other user on the Proximus network should have Android 14 as well?
Correct, I have Scarlet as provider (which uses Proximus network infrastructure) and still no update, yet.
The weird thing is, if I remove the SIM completely and look for upgrades (via Wifi), the phone still stays that none are available.
Would be more than happy if someone has more information to share (from support?).
That‘s not weird, your phone still knows, which provider you used. To overcome this, you need to install a SIM of a provider who already released the update. But with the risk of some incompatibilities with your original one, if the update is held back on purpose.
Hi all,
At the end of the blog we mentioned that you should expect to hear from us by mid-September about Android 14 for Fairphone 4. We have not forgotten about you, but we are still working on it and will give you an update on the timing as soon as we can.
Thanks for your patience.
Hi,
Here’s what I think and what I did. It’s my sole opinion and I might be totally WRONG.
Maybe you should not do what I did.
Sorry for my bad English. Also, as new user on this forum I can only post 1 image so (almost) everything is on it.
I bought a FP5 in June 2024 online on my own (no link with a provider).
My provider/SIM was Orange Belgium.
I started/installed the phone with the Orange SIM.
At that time, I did NOT notice a bloatware called App Center 6.1.7 from Orange was automatically installed as a system app (I think, because I cannot uninstall it).
A few days later, I switched provider/SIM to Proximus (Belgium). It was not related to FP5, or being unhappy with Orange BE; I just did it.
Then a few days later I noticed for the 1st time the Orange bloatware App Center impossible to remove (but ok to deactivate).
As everybody with Proximus (Scarlet, …) on this post, I was unable to update to A14, even when booting without SIM.
Today, I felt kamikaze: I removed the Proximus SIM and booted the FP5 with my old deactivated-with-no-network Orange Belgium SIM (so only wifi).
Immediately, FP5 proposed to update to A14 FP5.UT27.B.059.
I did it; shut down the phone instead of immediate reboot with Orange BE SIM; put back my Proximus SIM (I don’t think this step changed anything).
And now the FP5 is on A14 with a Proximus SIM.
… but still with that Orange bloatware App Center (witch was updated from 6.1.7 to 6.2.0).
So here’s my 2¢: FP does not know how to remove the Orange stuff (or is not aware of it, or …) so Proximus is not happy and does not validate the new firmware ???
Maybe for A15 ?
Seems to me that it worked because the phone was on Orange when it worked, instead of being on Proximus. If not, then only those people who used to have Orange, but now have Proximus (like you) would have this problem.
However, everyone on Proximus has the problem, so it looks like it’s Proximus, not Orange that’s the problem.
Unfortunately, Orange users (Orange FR for me) will invariably get this bloatware (and many other, totally superfluous Orange apps). In this case it’s not Fairphone’s fault, you would have the same issue with an (independently bought) Samsung. It’s Orange, and there is nothing you can do about it, except of course avoiding Orange altogether.
And yes, once they are installed, you can’t uninstall them. But you should deactivate them ASAP, because Orange (at least the french one) does not stop there : Orange has silently installed a bunch of other unwanted 3rd party apps on my phone (apps I fortunately could uninstall), probably as a means to make some more money…
Orange haven’t changed mentality from the times where ISPs filled your phone with branded bloatware to the point there was no place left for your own apps…
Short version: Orange will install things on your phone without asking, do not trust them.
Did you try instructions like this one, already: https://www.xda-developers.com/uninstall-carrier-oem-bloatware-without-root-access/
Thanks but no, I don’t have that much time to waste, especially since the very second I remove it, Orange FR will re-install the whole bunch again… I’m not interested in an endless war with their software dropping bot…
Simply deactivating works for me: They still take some space, but at least they don’t misbehave anymore.
Yes, @KurtF I understand, my post was more targeted on the @PiR 's question how to remove the Orange stuff after switching the provider
Thanks.
Here’s what I found:
FP5:/ $ pm list packages | grep 'orange'
package:com.orange.aura.oobe // Orange Manual Selector
package:com.orange.update // App Center
but I don’t dare uninstall them because I don’t know what I would be doing. I just deactivated them through the normal user interface.
If I ever feel destroy/kamikaze again, I’ll try to find more info and might open a new thread (off topic).
There are already topics…
Has anyone seen any official/clear statements with timescale about the AoD feature return? I’ve been postponing this downgrade update for a while now and it’s getting annoying… not mention it isn’t something i would want to do with my phone anyway…
So… is an update imminent or should i head to ebay with this one?
It’s approaching 3 months now since the original post, i wouldn’t have given any other company this long, but still there’s only so much patience i can exercise.
You can only ask this Fairphone directly via their support. I haven’t heard anything official about any kind of return of this feature. I fear they thought they could get away with this (problem solved!).
I recently got a survey (was that because my phone turned 1 year?) where I could state how likely it is that I’d recommend Fairphone to a friend. I chose a lower likelihood than I’d actually choose and added in the comments field that I was disappointed with how they handle the AoD feature, this impacted my trust in the company. I can only hope they’re listening…
Hello to all the FP4 users,
has anybody gotten their A14 update yet?
If not, does anybody have information about when we will get it on the FP4?
I seem to remember, that FP said we would hear from them mid-september…
And more detailed here
We aim to upgrade for Android 14 in Q4 2024 or Q1 2025.
Thanks for the answer.
So this is the latest informatin we got about A14 on FP4?
Updated a second info in the post above
Ahh…
I didn’t find that, thanks a lot!
