I do not think that using LineageOS as a base can reduce the amount of work for a release. How could it? I am also not sure whether Google would certify a phone with it or not.
Those pesky paying customers with their expectations…
@SuperMarkus
I am torn between flagging your reply and responding.
I do not want people to get the feeling of being censored here but I hate people being attacked.
@jochen0 post was factually wrong (FP4 was released in 2021 so not three years ago) and seemed to be exaggerated (at least in my eyes) which led to critical reactions. I guess the nature of the open letter opened the space for both appreciation and venting.
But your reply to @Paule was in my eyes ill founded and even slightly provocative (while not contributing to the discussion). Perhaps you have not spend enough time on the forum to appreciate people helping here for years on a voluntary basis.
I agree that snarky comments on this forum aren’t acceptable. And I’m really tired of some users communicating in that manner.
Even when their feelings are valid, and you don’t even disagree with their statement. The way they phrase it is really not constructive.
I would say that I have one of the oldest profiles in this forum. However, I have noticed that I have less and less desire to take part in discussions or help users here, simply because the tone of some users is dominated by latent aggression.
I am always amazed at the expectations that exist here and the aggressiveness with which they are expressed. Of course I understand the current dissatisfaction, especially in the context of customer support. It’s just that there were calls for Fairphone to finally communicate about the status - now they are doing it, it’s not ok again.
I understand the frustration about the Fairphone 4 update - even if Fairphone has communicated quite clearly from the beginning, only that many users here simply don’t want to accept that there is a dependency on Qualcomm - and that the Android 14 update is the first without support from Qualcomm, and is therefore particularly complicated.
I could go on now with the countless discussions about the monthly updates, and the at times almost hysterical yelling when there are slight delays. C’mon people, get a life!
Anyway, why am I actually still responding to such things?
Because you actually care. Not just about the device, but the community around it.
I’m with you. I care about being part of a healthy community.
Fairphone seems to have decided not to deliver Android 14. Ok, their decision I’m completely ok with that, I don’t needed always the newest Android.
You’re right, it’s release date really has been in 2021. But that makes no difference re. update path.
And the communication (better: the lack of) around the ghost touch problem let me doubt that something changes in the near future. It probably will influence my decision on my next smartphone purchase. I am disappointed with Fairphone (the company).
I would be happy to see that I’m wrong. In my job I frequently had to deal with marketing statements similar to this from Fairphone, that was one of the reasons for my 1st post in this thread.
But for me it’s not worth the effort to continue this discussion. Let’s hope I am wrong with my “translation”.
I haven’t been around here for that long, but this reads like a nice and candid update, and I hope you can deliver on these commitments. I can imagine similar statements have been made before, and that veterans are sceptical, but luckily for me it’s my first round.
Also, Ioiana, I mostly or only see you around here representing the dev team, so just wanted to say that we appreciate any communication at all, and I can imagine it’s a lot sometimes. So thanks!
Hear, hear!
Though I’m afraid by now the damage (to Fairphone’s reputation) is already done, and it will take some effort to fix it.
But it’s a step in the right direction (assuming it’s not an outlier followed by 6 months of heavy silence…), thank you.
Sorry but you sound more like a victim than a professional company.
Stop making excuses and focus on improving and reassuring not ‘excuses and poor us we are busy’ and ‘its not fair’ response.
Im already feeling like you have potentially lost me as a future customer after problems Ive had this week and very lacking customer support.
When I eventually got to speak to someone he was very helpful and the only reason I didnt ditch my fairphone four and go to buy another make.
I want to continue to buy ethically but I Also need a professional responsive service. I’ll keep an eye on whats happening and it will affect my future buying decisions.
Thanks.
@Ann_Ellis
Since your comment was a reply to my post, I want to make clear that I am just a customer myself and that I have no other relation to Fairphone.
When I read your “Some people are just impossible to satisfy. ” I actually thought of that very thing myself. I made a constructive comment about reducing maintenance burden and all you did is to ridicule it.
Plain LineageOS: No.
That’s why I wrote to make the necessary adaptions for Google certifications.
CyanogenOS derived from CyanogenMod was a commercial failure but it proved that Google certification using a community ROM as base is fine.
Hi Bjoern. Please accept my apologies. The message was meant for the fairphone person who was messaging. Please ignore it and again. Many apologies.
