Wishlist for the FP2

Your list already includes most of what I would have said. I particularly agree with size (too large is not better; I would say max 5"), features to keep (dual sim, replacable battery, micro sd) and improvements (sensors, fixed button labels).

To the latter I would like add and especially point out an improved touchscreen. The fairphones touchscreen seems very inaccurate compared to other phones (old and new) which I have used so far.

And – IMHO the greatest flaw in FP1 – getting proper open source drivers would greatly improve longevity of the phone.

Thanks for compiling the nice list!

One Thing to keep/improve:
Notification LED, please with all colors supported.
FP1 LED Notification is also able to display all colors, but it’s not (yet hopefully) supported by the software

I had a motorola defy before, and I really liked it for being waterproof. I’d love a waterproof fairphone.

Battery: It’s great to have an replaceable one, but it would be even better if it was a standard model available everywhere. I don’t mean AA cells of course, but there must be standard battery types for this. One I can get at the nearest consumer electronics store.

Or at least, try to use the exact same type as with the FP1.

Except, of course, the battery is fair, too. Is it?

Screen cover: That dragontail glass is fantastic, please use it again. I often rubbed it clean with any piece of cloth I had handy, though microfibre is recommended, and carried it in the same pocket with my keys. And it looks brand new!

Is it possible to have that glass with anti-reflective surface?

Hi everybody,

thanks, Ben, for this excellent wishlist, I completely agree with your topics and priorities!

Keeping device size (4,5 " max.) and Dual SIM will be essential features for me, because I’ll be using my Fairphone for both personal and professional purposes!.

I have to return my FP I to my former employer and I wouldn’t appreciate having to run around carrying TWO smartphones - or having to buy a set of new clothes and jackets with “extra-large” pockets to fit in 5" phones - if people “must” have tablets, they should buy tablets, but I need a PHONE!

And I do hope that the Fairphone team will keep the OS “slim” - I recently tested a Samsung S4 and was SO annoyed by lots of apps, layers etc. I did neither want nor need…;o)

Hi!
I also agree with most points but in addition I think wireless charging would be really great.
Especially as by now the Qi standard seems to be very widely accepted in the industry.
Cheers,
Christian

Interesting idea! I see an upside and a downside:

Pro: the USB socket wouldn’t be worn out that much.
Contra: You need another device (probably more high-tech than a usb cable), which can break and produce waste.

Also contra: you spill 30 - 40% of your energy, when recharging wireless…

Sure, the efficiency of wireless charging is not as good as over the cable, that’s right.
But I still think that it is a good option to have as more and more charging stations get available (e.g. at cafés, in IKEA furniture…) and as far as I know the additional hardware in the phone that is needed has only very small impact on packaging and the price.
So it would be great to hear what the design team thinks of this idea

I want to add my vote for wireless charging for the FP2. I just watched this video on how you can integrate a wireless charger into a desk so that it isn’t seen. Very neat. (http://lifehacker.com/integrate-a-wireless-charger-into-your-nightstand-478949465)

some news on the new hw: see http://www.heise.de/newsticker/meldung/Das-zweite-Fairphone-Bessere-Hardware-teurer-ab-Ende-Sommer-vorbestellbar-2570757.html (in german)

Thank you @marvin24!
I’m adding this to Fairleaks.

I would like to see an optional bigger battery which would require a bigger back cover. It would be even better, if one could choose this while ordering so that one does not have to have both.

And of course it would be great if Fairphone would say good bye to Android and instead of this partner with Jolla for Sailfish.

At least they are looking into get other OS up and running - it was stated that this was the main reason why they went to Barcelona!

Coming to this late, and I’ll probably repeat what has already been said, but…

I’d be happy with a slightly larger screen, but I think the actual phone size should be unchanged. Perfect pocket size as it is.

On that subject, the ergonomic aspect needs work. I love the aluminium back, but the smooth, square edges make the FP unusually difficult to use one-handed. Maybe some kind of matt plastic edge is required?

I see no reason to try making the phone weigh less. As someone pointed out, this generally implies more use of plastics, and I prefer a bit of heft in my hand.

Increased screen resolution: not a deal-breaker for me, as I’m happy with the current performance (and price) so whatever. However, the primary concern must be battery efficiency.

(And yes to a wider range of screen brightness)

I’ve also had the problem of my FP turning off in my pocket. Maybe just need a longer button-press to call up the reboot menu.

Now, I may be alone this one…

In an age where hardware buttons are disappearing, I’d like to have more. You see, I still use an iPod (shuffle) every day and have never liked using a phone for music. Why? Well, if I walk into a shop and quickly need to pause a podcast at a specific point, or if I need to change track/podcast while walking around, I just do it by feel. On a touchscreen smartphone, I have to take out the phone, unlock the screen, navigate to the music app. Even one customizable button on the rim would make a huge difference for me.

Did you see this Poll: What is your preferred screen size?

There are some music players for Android where you unplug the headphones so the podcast stops, and when you plug it in again, the podcast/music resumes. That’s what I do, when I need to stop my music playing on the FP.

There are also headphones with a “remote control” where you can start/pause a song with a simple click on the button. I can even change the volume with mine. And to skip a song, I only have to go to my lock screen (push on/off button) to get a music player-widget that’s only there when I play music (available wit he the Shuttle player).
(I guess there will be headphones that also have a “next track” button?)

See this:

You’ll find experiences from FP users and often comments, if the buttons work with the FP or not.

I think a reasonable conclusion is that there ought to be more than one fairphone model, seeing all the different wishes.

Anyway, here is my contribution:

  • seeing the trends (and the foreseen trends), LTE cat6 (300 Mbps) seems to be almost unavoidable.
  • large battery capacity (even if it implies a large phone)
  • truly good energy management software. After trying dozens of such apps, I only spotted two really interesting ones: Sony Stamina mode, and Greenify (this small app has a truly original way of handling energy consumption and doubled my battery life time!).
  • a quite large RAM, somehow allowing to extend the phone’s life since apps are always more RAM-hungry, and there are always smart new apps that you want without being forced to uninstall some others. I expect a phone to last five years, and although 2 Go will still be fine in 1 or 2 years, I would advocate for a safe 3 Go.

And maybe -I don’t know if it’s possible- a system to allow hardware upgrades. For example, in three years, a new mainboard is released, and one can just buy it and replace their Fairphone’s old mainboard with it (same shape etc.).
