I exported chats of my mathusalem iPhone 4 ( no iCloud backup) and had them sent to my email box. When I open one on my fairphone 2 it seems to mistake it for an update file and opens it with the fairphone updater. Fortunately I cannot launch the installation.
That means that the updater is set to open zips by default. Go to Settings -> Apps -> Updater find “Defaults”.

I don’t think you can restore WhatsApp’s history export from iPhone to Android (that’s how walled gardens work). I can’t find anything in a quick search at https://faq.whatsapp.com/
