I plan using a prepaid card as second SIM on my FP3 during a travel abroad soon, to avoid excessive data roaming costs. As this is my first dualsim experience, while using calls/SMS seems obvious, I wonder [dumb question] if I have to take care about anything for those apps that are somehow linked to my primary phone number: won’t messaging apps like Signal or WhatsApp or security apps be confused by the different number of SIM #2 used for data ?
These apps usually use your phone-number for verification only, otherwise they are not connected to your simcard or number in any way. You can take out all simcards and still use those apps.
Might be obvious, but I will still mention it:
Of course you have to select that second Sim to be used for mobile data and/or calls+sms, depending on what you want.
If you want to be 100% sure to have no additional costs, you should remove your main Sim, because people might still call you or write SMS to your “normal” number. Depending on your provider, also receiving a call or SMS can be quite expensive.
Pay attention when sending an SMS. The default texting app on my Fairphone 3 with iodéOS is QKSMS. It shows a little number 1 or 2 next to the message you’re composing, and normally any existing conversation initiated with one SIM or the other will default to that SIM for future replies. For new conversations, however, the default SIM might not be the one you want and it’s easy to overlook or forget.
