Welcome! Introduce yourself here!

Welcome to our community! Great write-up of your initiation to Fairphone :+1:

I just wished I or someone else here could have introduced you earlier to /e/OS which is an alternative operating system for the Fairphone and has a tad bit more of an iPhone graphical user interface. But anyway, I hope you will feel comfortable with your new Fairphone!

That would be mostly due to the Bliss launcher, which can be installed on any recent Android, so it doesn’t need a whole switch over to /e/ to get the launcher at least.
I’m in the camp of those who don’t like it, but that’s Android for you, there are other options. Here’s some info …

Hi I’m arobbo, currently in Australia.
I’ve registered on the Fairphone forums for one single, simple goal. BRING THE FAIRPHONE TO OZ!
I cannot believe that we aren’t already in the market zone for the company - which clearly has put the “Smart” back into “Smartphone” for all the right reasons. I like to tinker - build my own desktops, repair and upgrade laptops, I love Puppy Linux, my (vintage) 'phones run LineageOS and /e/ - because I make a firm commitment to my role in Earth’s ecosystem and will not stoop to the false economy that currently infects our planet. Bring it on home, Fairphone!
Best Wishes,
arobbo in Australia

2 posts were split to a new topic: Fairphone outside the EU

Hi, I’m Erica Garcia from India… Accidentally, got to know about fairphone when crawling the internet. I still don’t know more about this product…However, I hope one day it will reach to the other part of the world and will be a great competitor to all the existing smartphone manufacturers

Hi @arobbo and @EricaR,

welcome to this forum.
I guess your desires are recognized by Fairphone, as the techcrunch article based on an interview with Bas von Abel shows.

Though it seems, they will be aiming at the US-market first.

If you want to learn more about fairphone, there is a real library of information on the Fairphone homepage in the category “Story”.
They have lots of reports like the new “Impact Report Vol. 2
https://impact.fairphone.com
And you can of course search the web for reviews etc.
A first list of Fairphone articles can be found here:

(I even found an Indian homepage. )

Hi there!

I am Xavier, from Metz in the North-East of France (and I work in Luxembourg)
I have no FairPhone… yet… but I am interested in buying one sooner or later.
I am indeed not a big phone buyer (I have had something like 8 phones, not all smart, since 1995) and I have repaired by myself my current Huawei Mate 9 (with the main camera from the broken one of my wife), so I am already sharing the Fairness.

Now I have created my account here today, because even if I had already heard about FairPhone long ago, it has come again in my mind this morning when I have read this article:

I hope to keep my Mate 9 a fair time, but when it will become too old, I will certainly buy a FairPhone!

Hi all,

After many years working at Fairphone, and having been part of this adventure since I joined Bas van Abel in 2011 to start this organization from scratch, I have not been much part of the forum. We have always had great people that have been able to participate and I have been focussing in some of our impact projects. But there is some change coming and I felt it was fair to introduce myself to the community.

My background is in Product Design Engineering and Strategic design, and I am passionate about making products more sustainable but also products that can help us behave more sustainably. After being Circular Innovation Lead for some years, I’m transitioning to the Product Team as Design Lead which is exciting! I will be sitting at the beginning of product creation and will allow me to focus in integrating all I have learned about environmental sustainability and circular economy. I also host our Fairphone podcast (Fairtalks), in collaboration with our Brand Website owner Jan.

A bit more personal, I live in Rotterdam, I cycle a lot (sometimes to our office in Amsterdam), and I like cooking too much. I love close-to-reality dystopian stories, specially when they take form on a stage in a theatre.

I see you around!

Always nice to see one of the “founding fathers & mothers” of Fairphone say hello here. And glad to see you are not just staying on board, but taking on new challenges. :+1:

Hi everyone.

I’m Charlie and I’ve been after a Fairphone for years but my Samsung just would not stop working!! It finally gave up after 8 years and so I treated myself to my Fairphone 3plus a couple of weeks ago. I love it!

I work in education as a teacher and as an “Learning for Sustainability” adviser in Scotland. I’ve already done a mining workshop with teachers which was great.

I’d be keen to do an online session for teachers with guest speakers, Fairphone ambassadors, other teachers. I’d be keen to link it with Global Goals 9:Industry and Innovation, 12: Responsible Consumption and Production and 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions (protecting Rights)

If anyone would be willing to help via Zoom, please let me know.

The organisation I work for is www.afairerworld.org.uk and we are one of 5 Development Education Centres in Scotland. I’m sure the other centres would like to be involved too.

Thanks,

Charlie

Hi everyone,

I’m Maro. I am an IT engineer from Germany and have interest in various IT projects, usually in context of FOSS. This led to a Stockholm syndrome-like obsession with progress bars. I couldn’t prevent myself from tinkering with the software of my first smartphone, and that trait seems somewhat written into my DNA with permanent marker. On the other hand, hardware issues need to be simple enough I can solve them by a screwdriver and patience.
Combining that with what the company Fairphone stands for brought me here. Being welcome to do with that phone whatever I want feels like coming home, and reading in that forum makes me feel I’m not the only one. So here I am. I’ll try to be helpful on places I can. Don’t be surprised to meet me near LineageOS threads and other niche topics. Let’s have a great time and enjoy ourselves!

Take care!

Welcome!
Have fun with this forum and your Fairphone.
You are totally right, that there are quite a few likeminded people in this forum and help developing alternative software/OS for the Fairphone is always welcome.

Hello everyone
I never introduced myself after so much time here, so let me do so!

I’m Alex, a French teenager from Nantes. I discovered Fairphone through my brother a few years ago when he bought his FP2, and then I got a FP2 New Life Edition from the last batch in June 2019. This was my entry to the smartphone and android world. I discovered more and more things and was (and still am!) enthusiast about the values and ethics of FP. I remember the first time I booted into TWRP by mistake, I was afraid of resetting my phone :face_with_hand_over_mouth:
I joined the forum in February, got some useful and friendly help, and decided I would involve myself as well in helping others. And here I am!

I am also involved in some ecological projects in my town :seedling:, I play guitar :guitar:, theatre :performing_arts:, and various other things as well.

This is also an occasion for me, as @moraquem, to introduce a change in my username, I decided to change it from @Alex21 to @Alex.A. So now please mention me as @Alex.A!

I’ve just realised I had never formelly introduced myself either after all these years: I’ve joined in October 2015, before even receiving my first Fairphone

I’m Antoine, 32 years old, from France, I now live in Montpellier (South of France) but grew up in the Parisian suburb, lived 5 years is Paris, where, after some video editing studies, I also studied teaching, which both didn’t quite fit me, so I became animator for children in schools and daycare centers for almost 10 years, with a world tour inbetween : I’ve travelled through South-East Asia, Australia and New-Zealand for almost 2 years.
When I came back to France, I didn’t really want to settle back in the expensive, polluted and grey Paris, so I settled in Montpellier the year after, where I had some family to host me at first, still working as a daycare animator for children. But now I start to really be fed up with the precarity of the job (it’s almost impossible to decently live with it if you’re not official, which is rare and getting harder and harder) and now with COVID19, I want some more change, so I’ll try different jobs, starting by helping with the pandemic situation.

As for hobbies, I love going to the cinema - my teenage’s sagas and blockbusters (Titanic, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Matrix, Pirates of the Caribbeans…) are always in my head - and making short films with groups of kids and teenagers (with some basic special effects, they love it), I’m fond of playing theatre - especially improvisation - and videogames - especially Nintendo’s : I grew up with Pokémon, absolutely loved Kid Icarus Uprising on 3DS, became fan of Zelda (playing Zelda BOTW for more than 400h (!) now, but also Mario Kart, Ring Fit Adventure…), I love dreaming, philosophy, talking about politics! Imagining a fairer world while watching the stars in summer until very late…

About Fairphone, a friend from improv’ theater talked about it to me, and a few years after, that’s when I was in Auckland, working in door-to-door fundraising for Amnesty International that I received in January 2016 my first FP2, which I had pre-ordered 6 month earlier!
So I’ve owned a FP2 from launch - several actually, if we consider the 3 swaps due to technical issues, and I’m not even mentioning the numerous modules received under warranty  The joys of being “one of the first 17,418”…
But tired by all the issues that remained that tested my patience and commitment to the Fairphone cause - the battery length, the bugs, random reboot and slooooow photo taking - I’ve given it to my father (whose it’s the first smartphone, so he doesn’t bother much) when FP3 came out last year and decided to give Fairphone another chance… So I now own an FP3 - also from day 1 - and except for falling letters of the back cover and a small issue with the privacy filter protective glass, the phone’s working like a charm!
Being a follower of Fairphone for all these years made me want to imply more on the forum, and in real life, so I’ve become an Angel, even if my lack of technical knowledge pulled me from organising events, but I’ve just decided to move forward and launched the Montpellier community topic a few days ago.

I try my best to act ecologically, sustainably, responsibly, even if it is hard in this overconsumption society, which is why I really enjoy watching companies like Fairphone grow from a baby activist company to a bigger social entreprise. I enjoy watching more and more people getting to realise social injustices or about the environmental crisis… In other words: getting conscious of our impact. Better late than never! I like to learn about similar companies and social and ecological activism, so if you get to know any new similar company, feel free to let us know in the forum!

This is my cue! Born French, spent 10 years in Ethiopia, now I call Lower Saxony/Germany my home. Intent on encouraging freedom, be it either human rights, data ownership or communication. Being a technical noob, this implies I spend huge amounts of time on using non-mainstream systems without really mastering them. But I love it. So for me Fairphone is just the natural must-have which was called for. Nothing is perfect but to move things on a good path is a source of satisfaction. I am deeply grateful to all those technically versed co-fairphoners who enable my stumbling efforts

T.S.

Hello everybody,
I’m T.S. Spivet (that’s not my real name of course, but I’d rather be careful sharing that with strangers on the internet, although I don’t think anything bad about you guys…).
I’m 15 years old and live in Germany, so I can speak German and English. I got a Fairphone 3 in the middle of last year and fortunately have had almost none of the problems described here in the forum. I am interested in technology/electronics/repairs and how all this stuff works on the one hand and security/privacy/FOSS etc. on the other hand. (And of course for environmental protection and sustainability)
Nice to be able to share and discuss with other people here and hopefully find answers to any questions I may have.
Have a great day everyone,
T.S.
