USB cables discontinued?

I was waiting for the USB C 3.2 cable to come back into stock, but now the site shows it, and also the USB 2 one, as discontinued.

Is there a replacement in the pipeline? This seems a bizarre move if not.

Hi, thanks for pointing that out.It indeed feels bizarre. My guess is that they are working on a replacement but … They seem to be working on so many things now that’s hard to tell anything for sure

I’ll be accused of criminal negativity once again, but the truth is that the big USB cable Fairphone sold weren’t that good.
I bought the USB-C 3.2 “Long Life” cable for €35, and it died after a couple months of use: Apparently the extreme rigidity of the cable strained the soldering of the plug so much it eventually broke (apparently a common issue). That’s “Long Life” for you*…

On the other hand a cheap supermarket USB cable I bought for €5 is still working after 3 years of daily use, so do yourself a favor and get a cheap (but certified!) USB cable at your local electronics retailer.

*) Yes, after several months of waiting I got a replacement, but since I now know how fragile it is, it went straight into a drawer, where it will sit till I desperately need one, or it becomes so obsolete I have to throw it away.

Maybe it’s a good moment to point again to http://recable.eu, Eco friendly cables with capability to fix problems

Or Syllucid cables https://syllucid.com

Nothing comparable with Fairphone’s offering there, unfortunately, but if there is a real issue and no replacement planned, I will look elsewhere. This has spoiled my experience of Fairphone a little.

What is wrong with recable or Syllucid compared to FP?

I got a Belkin cable in Currys for about £15 and it’s on a par with the Fairphone cable. It’s braided as well and has worked as well as the Fairphone one I have.

You have to make a choice whether to have USB A or C at one end.

No not with syllucid they have an Adapter as FP has

Not that I’ve spotted yet.

Ah, yes, but it’s a USB 2 cable. These are OK for charging but not so good when transferring data.

Well so recable plus Adapter for USB-A

This is exactly my experience as well.

I wonder if the EU standardising on USB C has made this seem less important? The alternatives mentioned above may have been encouraged by this standardisation showing where to focus their efforts.

Having had similar problems, I ended up picking up a mass market cable yesterday, though ideally I would have preferred a cable made to ethical standards, had I been aware of them. If the Fairphone offering did not live up to its ambitions, it was not really a competitor.
