Update on the future of 3G

I just wanted to give an update, as the end of 3G comes closer. It has been officially announced, that on Munich airport, the second largest airport in Germany, both Telekom and Vodafone, the two German telcos present on the airport, will terminate all UMTS (3G) services on June 30th, 2021.

From that day on, making or receiving phone calls with a Fairphone 2 will only be possible if the fallback to GSM (2G) is set to enable.

LTE (4G) is still supported on the airport, but at the moment a FP2 won’t make VoLTE calls (although the software is there). The move was announced as “necessary in order to establish 5G” (which a FP2 of course can’t use)
