Ubuntu OS on Fairphone 2

And a link showing alpha status of ubuntu-convergence on a fairphone 2

Any idea which channel one should install? I tried stable which booted but didnā€™t find my SIM. devel-proposed and devel-rc-proposed didnā€™t boot.

Cheers!

could you say ma how you flash UbuntuTouch?
i always get this error: ā€œCanā€™t boot recovery imageā€

at the moment my FP2 runs on "FP Open OS 16.04.0"
an i flash UbuntuTouch with (in fastboot on Debian as root):
ubuntu-device-flash --server=http://system-image.ubports.com touch --channel=ubuntu-touch/stable --device=FP2 --bootstrap

Thanks a lot

Hey @marc13,

i found a way to run Ubuntu touch on my fp2
I had the same error.
Then I boot to the Ubports recovery with the power button and vol up.
-> Ubuntu actions->wipe date factory reset
connect the phone to the pc

and try the ubuntu-device-flash ā€¦ command without the --bootstrap option.

After that, the phone reboots. 15 min later there was a blackscreen and I removed the battery. and restarted the phone.

Now ubuntu touch works.

Sorry, I hope, you can understand my english

Edit: if you have a encrypted phone, you have to reset all android datas in the rec-manager

Cool! Which channels are you using and does it recognize SIM card?

sudo ubuntu-device-flash --server=http://system-image.ubports.com touch --channel=ubuntu-touch/stable --device=FP2

Stable channel, but sim doesnt work ;(

same here and only the stable channel boots up.

Hey @pata,

To flash Ubuntu OS on your FP2, do you need to have a particular build of Android ? Can I flash I with Fairphone Open or do I need the ā€œofficialā€ build of Android ?

Thanks,

spartid

Has anyone of you succeded in installing devel_rc-proposed which should come with sim-support, as far as I understand? Or in getting in contact with the ubports-people (mariogrip)? I tried both and couldnā€™t achieve one of it.
@anon59030904 Have a look at this wiki page
https://wiki.ubports.com/wiki/Installation-of-ubuntu-touch-on-fairphone

Thanks @juri.gagarin.ii ! Flashing with your wiki and the stable image worked, but no SIM support (shit !). I tried installing devel-proposed, but the phone stayed stuck with the Fairphone logo. Iā€™m back to FP Open OS for the moment, but I hope that problem can be solved

And by the way, does anyone know how to unlock your phone with Ubuntu touch, as just pressing the power button shortly didnā€™t do anything for me (I had to press it a long time, as if I wanted to make my phone reboot) ?

EDIT : for the second ā€œproblemā€, itā€™s not a problem any more and it works. But do you know how to enable MTP ?

Hey !

Did you try to send him an email at the address written here : https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MariusGripsgard ? If so, did he answer ?

Have a good evening,

spartid

sorry for long delay ,have been on holiday.
yes , i tried emailing, but wasnā€™t successful.
did you have any luck in the meantime? i nearly gave up. would really like to try it, as it looks very promising, but i donā€™t want to use an OS without any support. at the moment , i use the unofficial sailfish port (thanks mal), which works really good.

No problem for the delay !

I did not try, because the port of B2G OS for Fairphone 2 is very active, and my hope about this one is high ; much higher than the Ubuntu Touch one. I agree with you, I would really like if Ubuntu Touch could become a full port, but mariogrip seems to be alone on it (or at least, thereā€™s one developer with him) and I also donā€™t want to use an OS without any support.

Another reason is that if the B2G OS port for Fairphone comes true, I will be able to help them and try to develop apps (because itā€™s HTML, CSS and Javascript). It wonā€™t be the case for Ubuntu Touch, which uses a language that I donā€™t know and that I donā€™t want to learn for the moment. (Iā€™m sorry, Iā€™m feeling so arrogant writing thisā€¦)

I also tried the unofficial Sailfish port, but I didnā€™t like the terms and conditions that they wanted me to sign before I could try. It worked very nicely for me too, but I went back to Fairphone Open.

Well ,Iā€™m just a user and as such I donā€™t care about development so much. At least, as long there is a developing set of apps and (very important!) a way to support developers. This is a real problem with SFOS, I think. They have only got flattr, which I use to donate, but which is not as easy to use as PlayStore or AppStore. I donā€™t know about the other platforms. For the development of Ubuntu, I have become a patreon, but donā€™t see if something is happening. For B2G, I have to say that I canā€™t estimate how far away a working port is. (Beside this , I canā€™t see through the internal structure of the project.) But it looks interesting, as I like the intellectual concept of supporting the open web.
All in all, SFOS is the only alternative if I want to stay away from Android.
My deep respect to those working on the alternatives like Ubuntu, SFOS and B2G. (And to fairphone, as they support this in one way or the other.)

Hi,
Juste saw that article : http://news.softpedia.com/news/new-tool-lets-you-easily-install-ubuntu-touch-os-on-your-devices-with-dual-boot-509386.shtml
And FP2 is supported.
Looking inside the sources, it is helping doing
sudo ubuntu-device-flash --server=http://system-image.ubports.com touch --channel=ubuntu-touch/stable --device=FP2 --bootstrap
EDIT : Well, donā€™t expect much from this. From the author : ā€œHave one here but I cant do much about that bad product design. the user cant even tell if its booted into recovery or fastboot mode. thats just bad design. The problem is that even then the adb and fastboot implementation is incomplete so I cant perform basic tasks like live boot a recovery which is required for some operations. Todo: remove fairphone 2 from mdtā€

Is there any reason for having both this topic and the Fairphone 2 Ubuntu Touch topic?

It seems that everybody is posting in that other thread anyway, so Iā€™m tending towards closing this thread. I put it on auto-close in a week after the last reply.
