Touch screen does not recognize any fingers except thumbs

I am having an issue with the touchscreen on my fairphone 4. It literally will not recognize any fingers except my thumbs. I cannot use 1 hand to control my phone, pinching and everything only work if I use both my thumbs. It doesn’t matter how hard I press with my pointer fingers or soft. or which part of the pad I use, it DOES NOT ever recognize anything except my thumbs. It’s really irritating.

:astonished: Now that is a strange problem…

  • Does it happen when you hold your phone in your hand? (One hand holding the phone, one using the touchscreen)

  • If you give your phone to another person, does it display the same problem? (In other words, does it registers other peoples’ fingers?)

There is an old issue with the sensibility of the FP4’s touchscreen, it could be on your phone the sensibility has deteriorated so much it only detects thumbs, because they are thicker (more surface = stronger signal).
On the other hand (no pun intended), if it only displays this issue with your own fingers, it could be your skin is too dry (= bad conductor) and doesn’t register enough.

Note and FYI: Applying force doesn’t change anything. The touchscreen works because your fingers, which are electrical conductors, change locally the electrical capacity of the screen. In other words, what is important is electrical conductivity (which is why it won’t work with gloves).

Welcome to the community forum.

In addition to KurtF’s questions,

  1. When did this problem begin?
  2. Can you identify any event (such as an OS update or installation of a new app) that occurred just before?
  3. Please indicate the build number of your OS.
Go to Settings > About phone > Build number

I advise you to contact official support as this may require replacement of the screen under warranty.
