…und weitere Beobachtungen zu den Email Apps Thunderbird, K9-Mail, FairEmail und SimpleEmail
Ich bin es gewohnt mit Thunderbird zu arbeiten, insbesondere schon sehr lange auf meinem Linux Desktop. Von daher wäre auf meinem FP4 mit eOS die Thunderbird App naheliegend und dank schneller Installierung via QR-Code auch sehr praktisch. Das ging auch lange so gut. Nun habe ich aus verschiedenen Gründen die App nochmals neu installiert und stelle fest, dass Thunderbird (wie übrigens auch K9-Mail und der eOS-Email-Klon davon) sehr viele Emails gar nicht synchronisiert (mit IMAP). Da gibt es riesige Lücken z.T, von mehreren Wochen. Ich habe dies auf mehreren Fairphones versucht, immer mit dem gleichen Ergebnis.
Frage in die Runde: Hat jemand ähnliche Erfahrungen gemacht?
Da hier im Forum sehr oft FairEmail empfohlen wird habe ich nun diese App installiert und siehe da, alle Mails sind synchronisiert worden. Das Problem liegt also irgendwo bei Mozilla.
Zu FairEmail ist allerdings zu sagen, dass es schon sehr komplex ist: für einen “Normalsterblichen” wie ich, gibt es da viel zu viele Einstellungsmöglichkeiten, die mir oft gar nichts sagen, insgesamt 12 längere Kapitel (ich bin nun mal kein studierter IT-App-Wissenschaftler, und das können auch nicht alle sein, die einfach ein Email-Programm bedienen wollen).
Darum habe ich mich auch noch nach einer einfacheren Lösung umgeschaut und auf F-Droid die App SimpleEmail gefunden, einfach und bedienerfreundlich genug für meine Bedürfnisse. Interessant jedoch, dass sie nur auf F-Droid zu finden ist, nicht auf Aurora und auch nicht im orignalen Play-Store von Gougle. Kennt sie jemand hier?

Sehe ich das richtig, dass du e/OS installiert hast? Ich habe mit K9 Mail und posteo mit Davx diese Probleme nicht. Ich habe FPOS installiert.
Ich kenne SimpleEmail nicht, ist jetzt aber auch nicht ungewöhnlich eine open Source App nur im F-Droid store zu finden

…and more observations concerning the email apps Thunderbird, K9-Mail, FairEmail and SimpleEmail
I have been working for many years with Thunderbird on my Linux desktop. So, of course, it would be quite obvious to also use it as the email app on my FP4, especially as the installation of the email accounts with the QR code is very quick and handy. I have done so for quite a time. For some reasons I had to reinstall it again and have to realize that it does no more synchronize all mails, there are huge gaps in between, the mails of several weeks are missing. The same by the way with K9-Mail and the eOS email fork thereof.
First question therefore: is there somebody with the same experience?
As here in the forum very often the app FairEmail is recommended, I installed it, and all the mails are here. Therefore most probably the problem above must concern Mozilla.
Concerning FairEmail I must say that the app is very complex, actually too complex for an “ordinary” user as I am. There are so many details in the settings, about 12 chapters" and, being not an IT scientist, I hardly can understand all of them.
This is why I also looked for a simpler app and found one on F-Droid: SimpleEmail, quite user friendly at first sight and probably meeting all of my needs. Interesting though that it is only available on F-Droid, but not on the App Store, not on Aurora and not on the original Play-Store of Gougle. Does somebody know it?

Ich habe es auch mit K9-Mail versucht, manuell, und die gleichen Lücken erhalten (alle Mails fehlen von mehreren Wochen). Dasselbe übrigens auch auf dem FP4 meiner Partnerin mit ihrer Email-Adresse. Das Interessante ist, dass die Mails mit FairEmail und auch mit SimpleEmail (auf einem anderen Gerät) problemlos alle da sind. Sprich, dass wir zur Zeit weiter mit diesen beiden Apps kutschieren werden.
Ich habe noch ein weiteres FP4 als Reserve-Gerät zuhause, auf dem ich dann Thunderbird in ein paar Tagen wieder mal ausprobieren werde.

FairEmail certainly offers a high level of technical functionality. However, as the author himself underlines, a large part of the options can be ignored for simple use, and it’s always best to not modify settings you don’t need or that you haven’t studied in detail. I have always found it a most reliable tool, and it’s simple enough to set up for most needs.
It also features highly valuable functions for protection against dangerous content, such as confirmation before opening web links, and inspection of headers including a synthesis of routing hops with TLS indicators.
SimpleEmail is also open source*, and built for Android. I haven’t tested it, but from what I see, it might be a better solution for you. Its availability only on F-D would be seen by some as a “plus”.
PlayStore is highly controlled by Google, that many people around here have come to mistrust and avoid. Aurora is just a means of getting apps from the PS without having to create and use a Gg account and thus being tracked by them.
The App Store is run by Apple, for apps running on their iPhones and iPads, much like Google’s PS for Android, and many independent open source developers don’t offer versions for Apple devices.
* "Open source" (OS) means (among other things) that the code is published and can be read by anyone. That means that it can be verified to do only what it says it does. For example, it is possible to verify that an OS app does not relay information about you without telling you. Even if you can't understand the code yourself, you can decide to trust a community that can.

Of course I also mistrust Gougle, this is why always start searching for apps first in F-Droid.
Concerning App Store: I got the wrong name, sorry, I meant the App Lounge from eOS, the content of it is quite similar to Aurora.
So I will continue to use FairEmail and SimpleEmail on another device (Cosmo of Planet Computers with the wonderful keyboard of the old Psions Series 5 
). And later make a decision for one of them.
And I still have another FP4 as backup device, so I can have a look again for Thunderbird in a few days.
The App Lounge is part of the ethos of /e/OS, which I see as “making it possible to avoid Gg even if you’re not a tech expert”. It offers apps from both F-Droid and Aurora (i.e. from PS without a Gg account). That’s not easy to do, so it may sometimes have problems.
Das Rätselhat sich nach langem Suchen wahrscheinlich gelöst: wahrscheinlich lag es daran, dass man in einer früheren Version von Thunderbird usw. keine Einstellung ändern musste, die die Grösse der herunterzuladenden Mails bestimmte, jetzt ist sie default-mässig auf 128KB begrenzt, was natürlich ziemlich unrealistisch ist, die meisten Mails heutzutage sind schwerer. Vielleicht lag es zusätzlich auch daran, dass ich bis vor Kurzem noch POP benutzte und nicht IMAP.
Mal schauen, ob die Liste jetzt vollständig ist.
Und Ja, FairEmail ist mir zu kompliziert

After a long search, the mystery has probably been solved: it was likely because, in earlier versions of Thunderbird and similar programs, there was no setting to adjust the size limit for downloaded emails; now, the default limit is set to 128 KB, which is, of course, quite unrealistic, since most emails these days are larger than that. Perhaps it was also because, until recently, I was still using POP instead of IMAP.
Let’s see if the list is complete now.

das Problem, dass nicht alle Nachrichten synchronisiert werden, trat bei meinem FP4 (Android) zunächst bei K9 Mail auf. Dann wechselte ich zu Fairmail (“pro”), wo dasselbe Problem auftrat und auch vom sehr engagierten und freundlichen Entwickler nicht gelöst werden könnte. Nun bin ich seit knapp einem Jahr mit Thunderbird sehr zufrieden und nur die gesendeten Mails sind nicht immer zwischen allen Geräten synchron.
Sorry, sicher nicht hilfreich, aber eine Erfahrung

Inzwischen synchronisiert es nach meiner Beobachtung alle Emails, das Hauptproblem war die Eingrenzung auf 128KB, die ich als relativ lächerlich empfinde - denn welche Emails sind weniger als 128KB schwer (Ich gehöre noch zu den wenigen, die normale EMails ausschliesslich als reinen Text verschicke,). Beim früheren K9-Mail und früheren Versionen von Thunderbird gab es diese Eingrenzung eben nicht, darum bin ich erst beim Durchforsten der Einstellungen darauf gestossen.
Anyway, Danke allen, die da mitgedacht haben.
Auch wenn Du das Problem zwischenzeitlich beheben konntest, möchte ich kurz was dazu schreiben:
Ă„hnliches Verhalten hatte ich schon mit bestimmten Providern bei K9-Mail, das ich im Ăśbrigens sehr lange verwendet hatte. Bei mir lag es damals am Provider bzw. bei meinem Arbeitsmailkonto daran, dass das MS365-Exchange IMAP offensichtlich nicht so bereit stellt, wie der Standard das eigentlich vorsieht.
Ein Setting zum Download von Mails bis zu einer bestimmten Größe gab es in K9 auch schon, allerdings war es da eine Option, dass diese Mails heruntergeladen wurden, während von Größeren nur die Header geladen und sie beim lesen nachgeladen wurden. Eventuell wurde das mit dem Wechsel zu TB geändert.
Nachdem es dann für K9 keine Updates mehr gab (vor der Übernahme durch TB) bin ich auf Fairemail umgestiegen. Das war aufgrund der Komplexität, die Du zu Recht als Nachteil beschreibst, echt hart am Anfang, aber mittlerweile möchte ich es nicht mehr missen
Und so gut wieder Support anfangs fĂĽr K9 war, ist er nun auch fĂĽr Fairemail.
