My wish for it. A 6 inch sized screen instead of the current fairphone 5 one. (the one on the left is the FP5, the right one is my old samsung s21 [still on September security patch with newest software])
The Fairphone 5 is a bit longer and for me that doesn’t really add anything to it and a shorter length would be better so it could more easily fit in my pocet and would be easier to touch the top of the screen.
My FP6 wishlist
Sold in the states
Flat panel (dont hate curved screens, just prefer flat ones)
10 bit panel with 1 billions colors support
Gorilla glass 7i (to help keep cost down)
Plastic frame
Plastic back
No wireless charging (charging coil would just up the price)
Keep the ip rating the same as the FP5
Keep the same screen resolution
Telephoto sensor (I’d give up the ultrawide just to have this, also doesnt have to be the periscope variety)
Keep the sd card slot
Non LTPO oled panel (help keep cost down? I’m assuming LTPO ones cost more)
Ubuntu touch support (same as the FP5)
E/OS support
Snapdragon 6 or 7 series (help with battery life and overheating that the QCM6490 inside the FP5 had)
Keep the fingerprint scanner on the side
No ai (gone my entire phone having life without ever needing it and I dont need it now)
30 or 33 watts wired charging
Headphone jack
Things I want but highly unlikely things to happen with the FP6 (maybe FP7 or FP8)
Graphene OS support (I know Fairphone really needs to get their sh*t together before this happens)
Under display selfie camera (or give us the option to remove the selfie camera module and replace the screen with a punch hole-less screen
Gorilla glass 3 (I’m a big fan of this glass level, was perfect imo)
Dolby Vision
HDR10+
The next couple of years the industry is planning to move to AI on the Edge. Meaning more AI power on the smartphone CPUs, the latest high end CPUs Snapdragon 8 will have 50TFLOPS NPUs to do AI calculation. The CPUs are fabed in the 3 nm process. We see TSMC having trouble with 2nm process and even the next iphone will stick with older 3nm process.
I am concerned with the timing of the Fairphone 6 :
FP6 will arrive probabely with a very poor NPU like 90% of smartphone in 2025… except it will be sold for 2 full years…
I believe this periode is at risk for fairphone, since the sales of their phone might drop importantely.
People will not want to buy in 2026 a phone that doesn t do AI on the edge .
It s like surfing, you have to catch the wave with the good timing, other wise it s other companies that will do it.
I m doing my own reply . This is industrial stuf and dev, so I don t know anything on what is possible, but Its pretty sure it takes a long time to create a product… here are some ideas :
change the dev cycle at least for 2026 : launch a new CPU update in 2026 with a 3nm CPU/ NPU.
delay the release of FP6 to 2026
Make a FP6 where you can change the motherboard : retain the same design and work around how to easily swap the motherboard. This will be a competitive advantage in this moving AI landscape ; you could market it as beeing able to evolve with the AI needs. (eg: now we have models “seeing”, maybe their will be new needs on camera side too). FP6+ 2026 will be the first to have just a swap of the motherboard
A mixe of this : delay the release until end 2025 to make in the design the swappable mother board (if its not in the deisgn already)
Well i wouldn’t buy a phone if it has AI enabled…
I really hope for LOS or any other Android Fork to patch out this stuff ^^v
Sorry for the harsh words, i know normal consumers may like stuff like that… but i like my IT stuff as private as possible… and such thing on my phone would be the pure horror for me xD
Yeah i know, you meant more the hardware side of it… but yeah… i really hope fairphone doesn’t get on that AI route…
I’m so incredibly happy that they are not working on such a thing. It’s simply the latest BS that phone manufacturers are using to make their phones seem different. I hope a lot of the hype blows over soon.
I think the most important thing for any next Fairphone is that the specs keep it durable for the next set of years. The thinner and more pleasant they can make the phone, the more it will appeal to a broader audience. I don’t see any revolutionary changes needed for a next phone, I just hope they listen, improve the software side, and make the hardware as good if not better than the FP5 has been so far.
Have to disagree. AI is moving to edge and devices without it will be crippled. Soon a lot of apps will expect NPU capabilities and will not run on old devices without it.
It’s not about Fairphone working on AI Tools. It’s about future proof hardware that has support for edge AI. All major chipset vendors like Qualcomm and MediaTek as well as major device brands have their chipsets with NPU available and missing out on that might leave an FP6 without it fall way behind. That’s why y_cho’s argument makes sense.
Allthough it is probably a really difficult time to pivot towards these new chipsets. Its all relatively new and it might need some time for the dust to settle and the real standards to stand out. Other challenges like compatibility and interoperability will also kick in.
There is also a lot of misconception on the topic of AI. Like YokaiRick stating on his privacy, while edge AI is total local/private AI: not having edge AI means you’re stuck with cloud AI without any privacy. And gekooktei stating that it’s hyped and BS (which it certainly is in many ways) but it’s just a new tool that isn’t going away because of the strength in its own domains (recognition, detection, translation, generation, prediction, enhancement, … ).
That’s why an NPU might be an important feature for the FP6 to become successfull and keep up with the market for the next few years.
I appreciate the discourse, @faircosmo178! And you are right in the fact that whatever Fairphone, me or you thinks about AI, if Android 15 (or let’s say, gapps) won’t work without an NPU they have little choice.
But this is different than Fairphone working on their own AI assistant. I think that’s a silly endeavour and clearly, software is not their strongest suit as it is, so I would not want them to waste attention on it.
Fairphone is already the best hardware-wise platform there is from sustainability point.
Getting it to run state-of-the-art operating system will be a short path to dominating a market niche of people concerned with FAANG data hoarding and exploit toolkits.
I never took AI support here to mean AI assistant, but in that respect I completely agree with you.
In any case, the task for Fairphone is extremely complex given their mission and I eagerly await the specs the FP6 will offer. The NPU issue may even be a non-issue if a decent modern chipset is used and there are other issues mentioned here much more important (my vote for support for alternative OSes)
How about paying the extra money to get rid of most of googles semi required apps?
I think contact, calendar, gallery, photos, and whatever else there is that you can pay yourself out of would be good to have google-free. Even if the playservices are required for some apps to work well, you should try to avoid any of the ones that you can afford to.
