OK one day I’ll learn never to just update an electronic device without checking the consequences first.
When I try to drag the settings widget onto one of the home screens when I let go of my finger the settings menu opens. When I go back to the home screen the widget isn’t there. ???
2. Where has the push the left hand button get a choice of apps or widgets gone?

I don’t really understand everything you are talking about but I get the feeling you updated from 1.8 to 1.8.5 and liked the “old” launcher better? Well good news is you can get it back:
