A very smooth and small sized update, no issues with Plus, Poland

Got it minutes after the release, went smoothly but I want to report something strange.

When I locked my phone while I was at the update screen, it refused to accept my fingerprint when I tried to unlock it a few minutes later because “to delay the update please provide your PIN code”

then proceeded to unlock with my face…

updater shows as update size: 13.60 MB (coming from october 2024 update level)

Uh oh. I’m having a consistent way to induce a hard crash.
I can not confirm wether this update is to fault, because what I’m doing, I do suuuuuper rarely, therefore I never tried reproducing it on older software versions.

Recording video with Snapchat. That’s it.
Pull up the app. Hold down volume down to start recording. And after about 25 seconds of recording, the phone turns off, in the sort of style like when you remove the battery. Sudden dark screen.

EDIT: Wait. This has nothing to do with Snapchat. Or crashes.
Holding volume down just shuts off the phone??? Anywhere! WHAT.

EDIT2: Video demonstration.

I can reproduce this crash and just wanted to thank you. I finaly know why my phone sometimes turned itself off while it was in my pocket

This explains why phones in your pocket sometimes turn off :joy::person_facepalming:

Should we consider this a bug or a feature because this is like an emergency shutdown even if i don’t see a reason for this?

Does not “work” on the FP4… I would consider it a bug

I tested a bit more an this bug with the vol down button behaves just like pressing down on the power button. After the same time the phone shuts down but unlike the main method, using the vol. down button it just turns off and don’t reboot

Possibly this was added as a feature but it just cause an issue while providing nothing useful.

I’d say bug. I know this is an intended feature on android, but on any other device you need to long press a volume button AND the power button to make this happen. But I ran into this under normal use. Holding down the button to record a video. This is definetly not okay.

Same here, Fairphone 5.

Note that this even happens if you hold the button during startup, so it’s probably not some intended Android feature?

Holding a Vol Button and the power button has different “tasks” and not to turn off a phone at least not any FP

Really? Whats the difference?

It’s the screenshot function.

Well. Yes. That I know. Pressing them simoltaniously takes a screenshot.
But. What I’m saying. Is that HOLDING them for a long time, on most android phones, as far as I know, causes an emergency reboot. Which is an intended feature to help you reset from a lockup.

Or maybe it’s volume up. I dont remember. Been a while since I had to resort to doing it.

And yvmuell I AM specifically talking about any other, non fairphone phone here.

Well most Android phones isnt that important here I would say.On all FPs is means to either reboot into recovery or bootloader. So if a feature or whatever on other phones, it doesnt seem to be standard Android and to me it doesnt make a lot sense, as you can just press the power button to reboot.

Well, most android phones-, in fact most pieces of technology, DO follow certain design languages, or behavioural patterns, I think it is important to establish wether the FP5 is just simply following basic android behaviour (feature), or if this is a specific quirk of the FP5 (bug OR feature?).

The same way holding a volume button during boot up takes you to the bootloader menu by default on any other android phone.

I’ll confess, I do not know what happens if you hold down the power button for more than a couple seconds. You seem to be discrediting this Vol+Power behaviour because you think, what it achieves should be done by just the long press of the power button?

What are we arguing about here in the first place??

I dont discredit anything I just confirmed what holding power+vol buttons is doing on all FPs since the FP2 since many years. And I stated that a forced reboot on FPs is done by just holding the power button.

So talking about other devices is leading to nowhere in my eyes for this issue and overall only FP can confirm if bug or weird feature. Btw. its not causing a reboot when holding the Vol-down button, its just turning off so its not what you describe here for other phones
