Smartphone battery life and battery throttling

Hello everyone,

TLDR; discovered the concept of battery throttling, changed my 4Y+ phone battery and now the phone works way more better !

I just would like to share an experience. Maybe it could help someone to consider changing the battery before buying a new phone.

I own a fairphone since more than 4 years now which scale really slow and painful to use around the Android 13 migration…and I just discovered something stupid.

I used to know that battery life is decreasing with time. And I also know that fairphone recommends to replace the battery every 2 years.

But I misunderstood something.

For me the battery problem was ONLY about capacity.

The fairphone 3 has a 3000mAh battery.

My 4 years battery was still at 80% of this capacity (something around 2600mAh) and it was enough for my usage.

BUT there is something else I didn’t knew and I learned recently.

When the battery is aged, it cannot deliver as much energy as before during demanding tasks (high CPU load of bad connectivity for example).

Apparently this problem does not occurs at the really end of life when the battery is dead. It begins slowly while the battery capacity is decreasing.

When it occurs, there is a battery throttling to avoid the phone to pull too much energy on the battery. The goal of the battery throttling is to avoid a battery failure which would cause an unexpected reboot of the phone.

And this is a big difference compared to what I understood before. This is not just about the battery capacity but also about the power the battery can deliver at once (with stability etc etc)

After 4.5 years I finally replaced my “still working battery” and my FP3+ is now working far more better than before. I would not dare to say it is fast compared to a more recent phone but really usable comfortably and without big slow down line I had before the battery replacement.

Unfortunately, I did not succeed to find an application able to detect battery throttling.

furthermore I don’t even know where this system is implemented (android or hardware directly)

Apps like AccuBattery were helpful to estimate the battery capacity. But none of these kind of software or Android itself alerts when there is battery throttling.

Do you have experienced battery throttling before ?Do you know if there is an existing way (an application) to detect it as soon as it begin to occurs?
