The best Audioplayer ever is the Player Pro, its a commercial APP but not to expensiv! Its very userfriendly and easy to learn! For me five stars!! With the DSP Pack the Soundquality is absolutly amazing!
My personal favorite player has for years been Poweramp.
It is the only app I found so far that makes audio browsing and the playing of lists so easy.

I found “Pretty good music player” on f-droid which does exactly just that ^^ no weird permission, just explore files and play them !

Vanilla also has this feature. Works well for me.
I use “music folder player”, simple and directory-based, exactly what you describe.
