Phone won't charge, stops recognizing USB-C randomly

Hello,

I have a problem charging my battery and I suspect it’s a software issue rather than a hardware one.

I’ve had the FP5 since may this year and pretty early on I had trouble charging the phone. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn’t. This problem magically fixed itself as I didn’t change cables or components.
Unfortunately it stopped working again earlier this month. This time for good, no matter the cable or whether it’s connected to pc/powerbank. So I ordered a new USB-C port and replaced the old one. This seemed to fix the issue for several days, after that the charger randomly stopped working again (again, sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn’t) and now it seems to be completely broken again.

What could be the problem? So far I’ve tried:
3 different cables
3 different methods (normal/powerbank/pc)
2 different batteries
2 different USB ports (both seem to look okay)

Everything’s updated. Hope someone can help me.

At this point the culprit HAS to be the charging-controller or something close to it imo, as far as I know it is on the mainboard. If it is a software-Issue, the phone probably would not have the same charging-issue while being turned off.

Hi, had a similar issue with my fp5 last week (first it lost contact to my (physical) SIM card, then USB-C). Had a good support chat on fp support site (I purchased the phone at fp online shop) and they proposed to send it to their repair center. Waiting for return of the repair fp5…
Hope that helps.
Good luck

Hello BP58, I have a similar charging issue. With a ‘turn off - turn on’ of the FP5 it works.
I am very interested in the results of the repair centre. Please post it. Regards, Pete

what happened ? i also have the charging problem

Hello,

Same charging problems here.

After having changed several times the features to charge only slow and charge only up to 80%, my FP5 is charging now only, if I am using the Fairphone Charger (with USB-C), but not with any charger using an USB-A to USB-C cable.
My husband has also a Fairphone 5 and doesn’t have these problems. He can charge with any USB-A to USB-C cable.

If using an USB-A to USB-C cable, it says “charging slow”, but nothing happens. In fact, the SOC is going down due to usage time (not tried to use is, but it’s powered on, screen is off).

I tried to charge it while it is powered off: no success with USB-A, but works with USB-C cable.

For me, it looks a little bit like turning the option on and then off to charge only slow was in reality deactivating the slow charging functionality.

Of course, phone has been restarted and I am on the latest software version with the built-in version (Google Android).

Any idea, how to get this working again?

Thanks!

Welcome to the forum!
As you haven’t mentioned it: did you try to exchange the USB port module with your husband’s phone? Just to be sure it’s no HW problem and as I think this test is easy having two FP5.

Quick Question. Have you noticed any loss of battery while charging? As for both of my Fairphone 4 & 5. I haven’t reached 100% a couple of times lately. Its been sticking around 98 to 97 percent. I to am wondering if the port is going out on both it could very well be the battery going bad to. I keep thinking these batteries should last more than a year. Something must be up to not having a full charge a few times a week. I’m Just saying.
