Phone severely damaged, wondering how to troubleshoot what is broken

The screen of my phone is broken, and the phone won’t respond to being put in the charger, or trying to press any of the buttons.

Does this mean the core module is dead, or can it be repaired?

I see that the repair costs for the core module are € 222.64 through Fairphone. So that + the cost of the screen (89,95 or 124,75 at the repair ) would probably be the cost of buying a new Fairphone 3 off of a 3rd party website. All in all I’m quite disappointed in this outcome considering price is also a major blocker to repairing devices, and I just recently bought a new battery and protective case.

So because of that I’m looking for an affordable way to estimate the cost of the repair, before wasting my time sending it to them.

I’m based in Utrecht, The Netherlands.

Maybe you can give us a hint, what actually happend with your phone. Did you “just” drop it, or did it fall out of the car at full speed? Water damage?
If it was a normal drop: in my opinion its unlikely (but not impossible) to damage the core module with a drop. We have two FP3 in our household, which both have been dropped many times.
You should check, that all internal connectors are still in place.
Maybe a fairphone angel can help you with troubleshooting…

When did it go black on you? Right as the screen broke in two?

Given the fact that my FP3+ is also completely dead since yesterday, and there is one more thread of a dead core module this weekend, I’m wondering if the broken screen caused the non-responding of the rest of the phone.

Maybe it’s an idea to get togheter and try to use my phone as a donor for a new screen for your phone and maybe reuse the other components to figure out if your problem is in the core module or not.

Mine has an undamaged screen, and all the other modules were working fine until it froze on me yesterday. Replaced the bottom module myself last year,

I live in Breda, NL.

I am the Fairphone Angel in Tilburg.
I have for the Fairphone 3 a display, bottom module, speaker module.
Perhaps you both can come to Tilburg at the same day and we could swap the parts for testing.
Do you have interest in this?

Hi Lidwien, thanks for the offer. I’m interested!

Sounds interesting, let’s try to find a date.

Someone damaged it while I wasn’t near my phone, so I didn’t see the actual process. I believe they intentionally smashed it.

I’ve tried taking it all apart, and putting it back together, but that didn’t change anything for me.
