People can't hear me when I call

Hi everyone!

Since a couple of weeks, when I do a phonecall, the other person can’t hear me. I can hear them, but they can’t hear me. I noticed that when I put on the speaker, they can hear me but not always at good quality. So I figured out I should buy a new speaker. But in the shop, there are two different types (microphone or earmicrophone) which one should I pick? Or does anybody has another solution without buying a new one directly?

Thank you in advance,
Laureye

Unfortunately Fairphone does not provide spare microphones for the FP4 (you might have spotted spare parts for older Fairphone devices), so if you have a microphone issue, you will need to get in touch with Fairphone Support: https://support.fairphone.com/

I would recommend you run the built-in hardware tests first to verify this issue. In the telephone app, dial * # * # 2 8 8 6 # * # * to get a comprehensive set of tests (choose MANU to just run the tests you need).

One more thought: The FP4 has three microphones, each one in a hole of approximately 1 mm diameter – one at the bottom end of the phone, one at the left side, one at the top end. Sometimes when making a call, users accidentally hold one of these covered.

Why would you like to buy a speaker? You can here them, they can’t here you. So I go with @urs_lesse that you should test the microphones.
As he said there are tiny holes in the case, maybe clogged by debris.

I’ve had such situations if I occasionally covered one of the three microphones with a finger when holding the phone. Paying attention not to cover any solved the issue for me.

Hi Lautje,

I’m experiencing the same problem and I was already in contact with the support.
To be honest I think it’s a software problem and I told the support about it.
They suggested me to send it to the Fairphone repair center what I did.
They installed a new microphone and I got it back.
No improvement.
After getting in touch with the support again they told me to send me a new Fairphone 4.
I wrote them back that this won’t solve my problem but they insisted on a new phone.
I got my new Fairphone 4 and I have still the same problem.
Well as I expected

Ok, so, I wouldn’t believe that I did this so I tried the other solutions first… Turns out I wàs covering the microphone on the side. He’s kind of bad located, but now that I know I can keep that in mind. Thank you!

Very greatfull to know about the hardware tests (although it was indeed me covering one of the microphones), maybe I will need this in the future. Thank you very much!

Great to know the number of the hardware test, thanks for that but there doesn’t seem to be a test for the microphones… Any other suggestions, or do I have to go down the route of contacting support directly (as another user did, who eventually got the Fairphone 4 replaced but it didn’t take care of the issue…)?
