A Factory reset worked (knock on wood)!
SO very happy, thank you, @Stefan and @Roboe, for bearing with me. Hope this can help others, too.
So: turn off the phone.
Press Volume up + power to enter TWRP.
(There, first do a backup (press backup), either to the internal storage (move the backup to your computer via USB in between. Else the backup is gone. Hat tip to @paulakreuzer ) or to an external SD card if you have one. NB: restoring this backup made my problem re-appear.
Then restart and turn it off again.
Press Volume up + power to enter TWRP.
Press “Wipe” and swipe.
Reboot.
NB! Do not restore the backup! This made my problem return.
If you do that before a hard reset you should move the backup to your computer via USB in between. Else the backup is gone.
