Hi, I want to measure how bad my phone is, and I want to ask your opinion on whether to replace some part or buy a new one
I failed to find an objective test for phone health/usability (do you know of one? )
I created the following tests for it:
With a stopwatch, and a separate recording device, record:
From Shutdown to logged in, to open Messages
From locked to take picture and see picture
From locked, to maps, to directions to work, to start
My results:
From Shutdown to logged in, to open Messages - 58s
From locked to take picture and see picture - 16s
From locked, to maps, to directions to work, to start - 25s
I know this is much slower than when new.
Now what? Replace motherboard? Buy new?
How full is your (built-in) storage? (Settings > Storage)
If you are on Fairphone OS Android 13 , disabling auto-rotation and disabling system animations might help.

Storage: 53 / 64 GB
Auto-rotation always disabled.
Set “Remove animations” to ON, re-doing tests:
From Shutdown to logged in, to open Messages - 52s
From locked in home, to take picture and see picture - 13s
From locked, to maps, to directions to work, to start - 13s
Helped thanks
The point still stands. This is quite slower than originally, what do?
Factory reset, and if this doesn’t help, reinstall OS.
The reasons for which you should perform a Factory reset of your Fairphone are:
To protect your personal data when you are giving your device to someone else (ie. selling, gifting, lending, recyc...
Most probably you have measured how much the software conglomerate on your phone has aged.
It’s no different than on a desktop computer. The state of the whole software combination worsens over time. A fresh install mostly helps. On Android, the factory reset is there as an intermediate step to clear user data as well as Apps installed by the user and their data, which can already help, hoping the OS is not in a bad shape.

Factory Resetting, will redo tests before reinstalling all apps, and without restoring from backup:
From Shutdown to logged in, to open Messages - 47s
From locked in home, to take picture and see picture - 10s
From locked, to maps, to directions to work, to start - 13s
Helped
Doing the same tests on my wife’s brand new phone to have something to compare to:
From Shutdown to logged in, to open Messages - 29s
From locked in home, to take picture and see picture - 10s
From locked, to maps, to directions to work, to start - 9s
Hmm, not that terrible perhaps now. Do you think “Reinstall OS” is warranted with the present situation?

While
doesn’t sound that bad to me (even the 47s from before) - as the phone is probably not so often shutdown, I still think that
is quite a lot of time. Does it take so long to open the camera, to save the picture or to show it (or is the time distributed equally on these steps)?
