Information /advice on fairphone gen 6

Hello to all of you !

I am about to replace my iPhone 14 Plus by a fairphone 6 with android (I ‘ve kept my previous smartphone for 10 years). Is it possible to easily silence incoming unknown calls on the new generation fairphone like on the iPhone ? Besides how is the autonomy knowing that I mainly use my phone to surf the web ? My iPhone usually lasts 2 days.

Many thanks in advance for your advice🤗

Yes, you can easily block or silence unknown callers, at least in /e/OS and I suppose the same applies to Android.

I find it difficult to compare your two days with my one and a half, since it depends so much on how actively the phone is being used, but the battery of my FP6 lasts considerably longer than those of my previous phones – and I have been using it A LOT since I got it on Monday.

Maybe you might want to give /e/OS some consideration as well — I’m quite impressed by how smoothly everything works, including government and banking apps (which often tend to be a problem on de-googled operating systems). Setting it up was pure joy. (Of course five days is too short a period to give a verdict on /e/OS and the FP6.)

Hi, welcome to the forum! I’d say I’ve been using the FP6 lightly today (some web browsing, listening to podcasts) and I’m currently at 64% (it’s 23:21) with 2:30h of screen on time. In my experience the battery is good, but not anything special. On a heavy use day I usually drain it from 100% to around 30% by the end of the day, with 5-6h of screen on time. I’ve seen people report better numbers, but I can’t get there with my usage.

Side question, why do you want to switch off of your iPhone 14? It’s a pretty recent phone, still has software updates and arguably, the FP6 would be a slight downgrade (or not an upgrade at least). Unless you have someone else to give/sell the phone to, I’d advise against switching to the FP6. Fairphone themselves always tell you that the most environmentally friendly phone is the one you already have. So unless you’re unhappy/having issues with your iPhone, it’s best to stick to it for another few years and maybe come back for an FP8 or something like that :))

Hi !

Many thanks for your quick reply.

I am looking for a smartphone with a more than correct autonomy, that’s a point.

I would love to try the Murena alternative but I use mostly my phone (and not my computer any longer) for connecting to bank accounts etc , a camera app among other things ( = Ubox not sure whether it will work) and ..I am not a geek at all. I would spend too much time solving problems although I love the idea of being invisible for the GAFAM.

Besides I read the fairphone community is very supportive, and that’s been proven right now, through these messages :folded_hands:

Take care🤗

Hi !

Many thanks for your quick reply and your experience with the fairphone gen 6.

Having a smartphone with a more than correct autonomy is a real issue for me.

Actually, your message is full of good sense : I should keep my refurbished iPhone 14 Plus, you are right , although recharging the battery can be tricky at times but I guess the problem may be due to a faulty cable.

Besides I was able to check yesterday (too ) that my iPhone is compatible with iOS 28, so I can keep it -at least- for two more years.

Besides, despite the fact it is refurbished it did cost me a lot of money and I have to make this purchase profitable (I bought it almost two years ago).

I kept my previous smartphone for 10 years (an LG) and since then I’ve been through various smartphones that were not worth the publicity around them, very disappointing!

The last one was too google-sided and therefore had regular problems. That is the reason why, I have developed distrust as far as the GAFAM are concerned ( yes, I know Apple is part of them🙃).

So, now, I do keep an eye on what’s going on so that I won’t be caught unprepared when my iPhone is finished. I took information on the Jolla phone too which is in preorder until the end of January.

As you suggest, I will go for the next fairphone , especially that the generation 7 won’t be developed before a few years, fair enough (otherwise it would be suspicious and would go against the values of the brand)

I realise too that the fairphone community is really supportive, which is another reason why I will go for a fairphone when I need it.

Take care :hugs: and enjoy your generation 6 :+1:

Yeah, probably best to keep your phone. With regard to your future Fairphone: I completely understand your point — I’m not a fan of tinkering either. However, based on what I’ve seen in this forum, stock Android seems to cause more issues than /e/OS, especially after the Android 15 update. All the banking apps I use from Sparkasse (Germany) work flawlessly on my Fairphone 6 — including S‑PushTAN, Mobiles Bezahlen, and S‑ID‑Check. That may vary, of course, so it could be helpful to ask other users about their experiences with your specific bank.

I’m really not trying to convert anyone, but my general impression from the Fairphone and /e/OS forums is that user experiences with /e/OS tend to be more positive than with Android. Still, my own extremely positive experience with /e/OS (after only one week) might not be typical.
