Hello. I recently got a Fairphone 6+ and it has been pretty decent so far after switching from a Nothing Phone 2 after cracking the screen and unsure if they would still support an official repair for it after it had been out for a while when they weren’t supporting the US versions of their phone that much compared to other regions they have launched in.
Anyways, there is one feature that I miss about it that might not just be them having it. It was a pre-Gemini version of the Hold Home for Assistant feature where you can just easily do circle to search as well as just OCR the screen to either copy text that I can’t normally copy and paste on mobile, as well as translating what I see on screen with a simple press of the translation button (of course OCR scanned translation). The current one forces interaction with Gemini and doesn’t do the OCR overlay on the text to show what it may be translating to without actually asking Gemini directly. It was especially useful in translating manga pages from other languages to English. Circle to Search was also a nice feature that allowed for easily reverse image search and image I find elsewhere online to find the source, or find out more about an object very simply without needing to interact with Gemini directly for an answer and do my own due diligence with the information that I was presented.
Only other solution I have tried out so far is Circle to Search on F-Droid/Droid-ify. It is close, but lacks polish, probably due to it still being in a pre-1.0 state, and lacks OCR translation. It isn’t bad, but it doesn’t seem good for prime time just yet.
I wish I could switch it over from being the current one shown on the left of the image to the one that is currently on the right side of the image.
Edit to add: now I’m just realizing after all my searching that the current iteration with Gemini isn’t actually circle to search and it is rumored to be coming later (hopefully). Sorry I’m new to all this with Fairphone and thought that they’d be a bit more ahead of the curve around to where everyone else is update wise. Wish I could get that, but I support fairphone’s mission so I am fine waiting patiently.
