I thought the Fairphone was supposed to be repairable?

I sent my Fairphone 6 to be repaired after 18 months. It was within warranty. My husband broke the SIM tray helping me remove the SIM to send it for repair. I am being quoted E210 to repair the phone. The phone itself cost £500.

I bought the phone because I liked the fact that it was described as long-lasting and repairable. This doesn’t make any sense to me. Repairs I have had to previous phones I have owned have been maximum £75. For me the whole Fairphone business model is utterly undermined. I am so disappointed.

Without knowing what was faulty, it is hard to judge, whether the price is reasonable.
And how was the SIM tray involved in the problem?

The SIM tray itself can just be reordered and is <10 Euro. If the repair is quoted as being this much, some other components were damaged that would not be considered in-warranty. If you want to share what exactly you are being quoted for with a users only forum that would help us understand WHY the repair is that much, otherwise the best action would be to contact fairphone directly :frowning:

Hello and welcome to the community forum. I am sorry to hear about your frustrating experience.

This is the official out-of-warranty repair price list for FP6

https://support.fairphone.com/hc/en-us/articles/37450191748370-Out-of-warranty-repair-costs-for-The-Fairphone-Gen-6-Gen-6

The SIMcard repair might be connected to the mainboard repair, and this on its own would cost more than 220 euro (plus the shipping, handling fees).

You can try challenge the quote by contacting directly the Fairphone (not the repair centre), as others mentioned, we do not know the details (what was broken, what was the repair quote, why it was rendered an out-of-warranty repair, etc.)

This is what they are saying they have diagnosed. But the phone was in warranty!
Very hard to get in touch with Fairphone. They just keep repeating the repair quote.

Scratches on the casing and screen

  • Broken SIM tray; device powers on and charges (I=3A)
  • Lock code present
  • Software update successful
  • Mic 1 faulty; CRFU mic faulty. Swapped for V2 parts: CEL(ZRQ) flex V2 (JAE) and CRFU V2(2RQ) + SIM tray

Thank you - do you know the best way to contact Fairphone directly about a complaint. I can’t seem to find anything on their website.

Ah, this gives us a better idea- but still, fairphone support is your best option. I don’t know if the same site exists in Europe, but for US consumers it is explained like this (and this would be consistent with other brands)

How repair costs work and how to request a repair – Support (North America)

How is it determined if my repair is in or out of warranty?

Our technicians perform a final diagnosis once they inspect your device. A repair is out of warranty if the warranty period has expired or if the device shows user damage (such as liquid exposure or drops), which voids the manufacturing warranty for the entire device.

Why are minor repairs relatively expensive?

Regardless of the spare part cost, total repair fees reflect specialized labor, technical expertise, and testing processes required to safely open, repair, seal, and quality-check your phone.

I would assume the chat is the quickest but you can also send them the message.

Also, check your repair related emails, in one of mine I had the suggestion to send an email to this one, but never tried it - repair.portal.support@fairphone.com

I still don’t see the reason why you sent it in for repair. But anyway, for Fairphone it looked like the device had a hard life: scratches and dents on the frame and the display.
Together with the broken SIM tray, that might have void the warranty.

It may sound harsh, but: ‘My husband broke the tray’ means ‘the customer caused the damage’. This is nowhere covered by warranty.

And if something on the mainboard is broken, the complete mainboard has to be replaced.

Yes but E210 is excessive to repay a SIM tray. This is not a repairable phone.

Sorry, but you are still refusing to answer the questions. The broken SIM tray was not the root cause of the repair. It broke while you were preparing the phone for shipping.

210€ is not the price to repair the SIM tray, just to keep things correct for others reading.

So for me its also not clear why the phone should be sent in first place?

The mics are on the Main board, which explains the high price

When the phone was within warranty they should have explained you why its not repaird under warranty, such is normally also mentioned on the repair Quote.

The root cause of the repair was that the microphone was broken, and that the connection to the internet was glitching.

You can repair yourself your phone, this is what means being repairable.

If you don’t do it yourself then you have to pay more than the price if the broken pieces. If you broke something like the motherboard, it can cost a lot too (and you cannot replace it yourself).
