i can’t work how to access text messages and start a text conversation.
Tried opening the (Google) messages app? That is the default SMS app on Android devices (including the FairPhone 5)

When you speak of text messages I’m (and Furdiburd) assuming you mean the standard SMS and not Signal, Whatsapp or similar.
Could you provide some more details such as country and provider, also if you’re using a new SIM.
The best would be to get somebody to send you a SMS. By default, you should get a notification which will lead you to the correct app.
You can also work from the Contacts app. Create a contact with mobile number. The app will offer you choices like make a call or send a text message.
