I just download it and it looks good. Even has built in image editor with filters, markup tool with different “paint” tools like Stylus, Marker etc.
My only issue is that the name of the app is not localized unlike Fossify Gallery which says “Galéria” while the FP app is just Gallery
It feels nice but it is a bit laggy on my FP6, I can clearly see that frames are being dropped while scrolling.
Another issue I’m having is that I can’t set it a s the default handler for viewing the latest photo from the camera (when you click the photo in the bottom-left corner).
It got available for my FP5 as well which is nice.
It feels very similar to Fossify that I have been using for a while now, with some small differences in editing tools.

The UI is great! But it’s laggy and has a lot of scroll jitter. I hope they won’t spend too much development time on this, since there are other things that need attention. Like the launcher is still having the same bugs since Android 14? Google Photos (or another 3rd party app) works fine… There are also some other longstanding bugs across the board. But let’s see. Maybe the Gallery app is just a few iterations away from being low maintenance.
Edit: it seems smooth now, I guess the indexing needed time.
I just installed via the App Lounge and can run this app on my Fairphone 
+ on /e/OS 4.2-a15-20260816663281-community-FP3. Immediate impression is that is is laggy, yes, but then again I have a bazillion of photos on my SDXC card, so it is nothing I would find surprising.
One thing the app would strongly benefit from for me is the option to exempt folders from inclusion (e.g. I have a lot of music artwork/booklet scans).
P.S.: It did take some patience after downloading the app from the App Lounge. Installation seemed at 100% a couple of times, but it took a few re-attempts to actually complete it and see the app icon on the screen.
On a different Fairphone 3 that runs the experimental Android 16 I have been able to install Fairphone Gallery through the Aurora Store (anonymously). It launches and seems to work for a few seconds, but then keeps redirecting to the Play Store.
From a fairphone design language and if your goal is getting rid of Google’s grip POV I think this app is fine for a first public release, but if you bought the Google version anyway because you rely on some functionality / don’t actually mind it (and so far the little preview in the left bottom corner of camera viewfinder opening the Google Photos app by default anyway) for me it’s a nice to have rather than a must have if I’m being honest.
Design is great, performance is fluid so far, editing & sharing tools are functional as well.
Just wish you could exclude a folder as I’ve every album art cover from my music in there.
Otherwise a great app for a version 1 release.

But the Fairphone Gallery app doesn’t seem to be Open-source (I couldn’t find it at their Github page) and there are also no mentions of the original app anywhere. I don’t have a lot of experience in this field, but wouldn’t this be a license violation?
Why is the Fairphone Gallery so huge in size? Fossify Gallery is just 30 MB with all data 200 MB while the Fairphone Gallery is 320 MB húst by itself!

The original app also had the problem, but in the newer versions of the app its optional to download the ai models
Would you kindly elaborate why you think the FP app is based on this other app?
It does look similar, but even if it is a fork, it doesn’t automatically mean it has to be distributed as open-source as well.
The Apache License also allows distributing a fork on a different license, so Fairphone could have reached an agreement with the developer. It is probably best to ask them directly via support.
The lagginess is gone after disabling the blurring effects (“Unschärfe-Effekte” in German) in the app’s settings.
Looks like they haven’t added all languages (yet?). For German it’s properly called “Galerie”.

I doubt they would make such public before release, so in my eyes this could still happen…
However as said by @kwasow its best to not spread wild speculations about illegal license use and ask them.
