High charging consumption with power bank

Hi there!

I’m doing cycling trips for 3-4 weeks once a year and charge my phone with a 10.000 mAh Powerbank which worked fine with my old Samsung phone.
I’ve just tried it again - here is what happens…
Samsung S10+ 8>85 % - 25 % needed from the Powerbank
FP charging the same amount - 75 % of the Powerbank needed !!!

So this is an absolut No-Go when you’re on a longer trip as I’m charging the power bank with a solar panel

Here something has to be done - is this a known problem??

Thanks for your help!

Goal Zero venture 35 Powerbank (new)
FP 5 (2 months old)
Samsung S10 + (ca. 4 years, ca. 3500 mAh)

S10+: 85%-8%=75% 75%*3500mAh= 2625mAh

FP5: 75%*4200mAh=3150mAh

Often the phones stay awake while charging and consume more power than if they are running on internal battery. If you want to check if this is relevant you could recharge the FP5 while it is switched off.

If there are different ports at the powerbank supporting different charging protocols you could try the different ports. QC (QuickCharge), USB PD (Power Delivery) and USB 5V/x,y A are the keywords.

Did you change the Powerbank?

Is the phone hot while charging? I mean, all the energy must go somewhere and heat is always an easy way out for our gadgets. You write that you charged both your Samsung and your FP5 from 8 to 85%, so a charge of 77 percentage points. While I’m sure that this scale is probably not linear, let’s assume that for a while. So the 3500 mAh battery of the Samsung phone has taken around 2700 mAh from the 10.000 mAh powerbank which equals about 27% which is close enough to 25% as what you’ve described.
For the FP5 you also charge from 8 to 85%, so again 77% of the 4200 mAh battery equals 3.234 mAh and thus around 32% of your 10 Ah powerbank. Which means that if the powerbank was down to 25% afterwards then an energy of about 4300 mAh has disappeared, a complete FP5 battery! That doesn’t sound right. How long did it take to charge? Was the powerbank really full when starting to charge the FP5?
I’d try this again and see if the behavior manifests. Then check if there are any battery-eating apps on your phone. But really, something must have been warm if not even hot while charging if those numbers are real.

Apart from that I’ve made some good experience with hub dynamo chargers (e.g. Forumslader) which deliver energy even if the sky is grey and it’s pouring as long as you move like 30-40 km per day I’d say.

I’ve been charging it in off mode and on mode - same consumption.
Unfortunately FP charge then up to 100 %, the battery safety mode till 80 % doesn’t work when off.

The ports are the same, tried both on 2 new powerbanks.

Thanks for your advice!
Yes, the FP gets warm - like the Samsung.
Yes, this means a complete FP battery was gone - that’s what makes me write this post.
The option of using a dynamo charger I’ve had already - but the point is that the energy I’ve produced is running away without use.

So I’m still looking for an solution - there is also no app which takes an overwhelming amount of energy. :face_holding_back_tears:

Hi, I have a similar 10000 powerbank. I recently tested it in the mountains and (if I remember well) was sad to discover it was not enough for two full charges of my FP5. I will test more in the following days as I am travelling again and will report back.
For the reference, it is not a completely new powerbank, I have purchased it last year. When travelling I switched off battery saver limit and switched to fast charging.

Completely understood. Coming from the FP2 which was also good as pocket warmer I had the impression that the FP5 was already a huge step forward. But I’ll keep an eye on my FP5 and will have a look at its consumption next time that it’s almost empty and I charge from my Forumslader because that one has a Bluetooth interface which provides some information about how much energy goes into connected devices.

I have a similar experience, with FP 4 though only if using while charging: 20% of my bank is enough to recharge the phone if I am not using it, but if I am the bank runs down alarmingly fast. But IIRC enabling battery saving mode helps somewhat.

Fun Fact: Some people like 30,000 or 24,000 batteries for multiple charges. 3,500 doesn’t charge most devices today. At most it gives you a 70% charge, and is meant as pick me up from a almost dead phone. Just for your information.

I duly report that I used 53 % of my powerbank on charging 80% of my FP5.

Accubattery reports I only charged 3000 which should be like 30 percent.

Yet I am not so concerned. I have had some heavy usage while charging, taking pictures, GPS, various travel maps, online via roaming.
