So I use the FP headphone jack with a wired pair of samsung ear buds, and can hear fine but the microphone doesn’t work at all. It works fine on other devices. And I was able to get bose bluetooth headphones working. Is there something obvious I’m missing, or are the wired earbuds just not compatible with FP4 for some reason?
(Another random microphone-related thing is that I can’t get the speaking function in Duolingo app to work - this is just using the phone regularly, no headphones.)
Make sure that the DAC unit is compatible for microphone, it may be only usable for listening.
If you’re using the adapter sold in the Fairphone shop, the specifications say TRRS compatible so you should be OK. However, the mic contact is at the base of the jack (assuming CTIA pinout) so make sure the jack is properly plugged in.
Non-jargon version : make sure you’ve pushed the jack properly into the audio socket, since the mic contact is the last to go in.
Yes, I’m using the Fairphone own-brand adapter, so it should be fine for microphone.
I’ve double-checked the connections, and everything seems to be plugged in as far as they can go! Do you think I might have just been unlucky, and need to buy another adapter?
Hi, I experience the same problem with Bluetooth headphones.
My FP4 uses them, but not as microphone.
It uses the internal microphone. I have verified this by using the sound recording app: connect to the headphones and talk when the phone is close to me or far from me → the loudness changes, whereas for headphones’ mic it should not.
Similarly, the loudness changes when turning the phone.
That is a problem of FP4, and not of the headphones, as I tried this with both Fairphone Earbuds and another pair of headphones.
Further, my brother has tested it with his FP4 and his earbuds - same result.
It appears, thus, to be a software bug of FP4.
I’m on the last update: FP4.TP2L.C.0126.20240909.
I have acutely noticed the problem last week, but it might have been around for longer.
I’d appreciate it if someone else could test and confirm the issue independently. We could then tag the Fairphone developers to make them aware.
