In case somebody else has a similiar problem: My wife’s phone sometimes got hot and unresponsive, battery was drained heavily. Using “adb shell” I found out that a process related to Google Play Services (com.google.android.gms.persistent) was running permanently with high CPU usage. Clearing the data and cache of Google Play resolved the issue fortunately (https://mobileinternist.com/how-to-reset-google-play-services)
