However, i noticed that while i was listening to the different standard ringtones with headphones plugged in, that audio was also being played through the phone’s internal speakers.

that is a normal and wanted behavior of every Android Phone. Ringtones are always playing on all audio sources. Normal Music form an audio player shoudn’t do. The idea is that you shouldn’t miss a call ever if you have earphones plugged to the device but not to your ears.
