FP6: Can/will it support VoNR (voice over new radio)?

Hi there,

I’m daily driving an old Samsung Galaxy S5 (2014 model with 4G LTE) on a custom ROM and I’m forced to update to a new phone due to most carrier networks now dropping 3G support. This makes my phone unable to place/receive phone calls as it lacks VoLTE. I’m considering moving over to a Fairphone 6 for the long software support and ability to run custom ROMs. However, I’d like to know if the FP6 does support VoNR (voice over new radio), which is the equivalent of VoLTE but for 5G. I can’t find any information about it on the specs. All I know is that the Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 supports VoNR on the hardware side but it needs proper software (and carrier support obviously). I know that VoLTE is perfectly fine for now but I tend to use my smartphone for as much time as possible. In fact the only reason I’m now considering a Fairphone is that my S5 can no longer place/receive phone calls incl emergency calls. So if possible I wouldn’t have to buy a new phone if the FP6 does not support VoNR and VoLTE is dropped before the end of software support of the FP6 (2033), which is unlikely but still possible. Many recent phones already support VoNR although it is not really deployed yet. But since the point of getting a Fairphone is to keep it as long as possible, I’d hope the FP6 does support VoNR too. Any information on that matter? If VoNR is not yet supported, could it be possibly added later on using a software updates (firmware)? Thanks!

You will most likely get a faster answer by contacting support via their chat.

To confirm by a user you need one having the phone and a contract with a provider (best your provider) providing it.

Thanks! I did contact Fairphone chat today and they confirmed the FP6 is technically capable of VoNR but that network operator support is limited. So it is at least good to know the device is technically capable of this new tech!
