FP5 with e/OS won't show any updates past Android 14

Hey guys,

I have a FP5 with e/OS 3.1.4.-a14-20250917527144-community-FP5 installed.

That means the latest Security Patch level is from 01.09.2025 which worries me a bit. There should be an update to Android 15 with the latest Patch level but I can’t find a way to install it. If I check for updates it says “Device is up to date” which is a blatant lie. I’ve already tried the official troubleshooting guide which unfortunally didn’t help: https://support.fairphone.com/hc/en-us/articles/27581562949522-Fix-software-update-problems

There is an option “locale Update” in the System Update settings. But Ican’t even find where to download the latest e/OS build.

I’m pretty stuck here. The only solution I can think of is to reflash the whole phone with the e/OS installer to get the newest version. But that would delelete all data and would be the absolute last resort.

I’m a bit suprised to have such issues since Fairphone is adversiting it as “long support” and user friendly. It’s the phone of my mom which I see like once a year and updating it manually by reflashing the whole thing is an absolute no go. We are not in 2010 anymore. Any ideas?

Hi Rico,
welcome to the community forum!

That’s the manual for the OS provided by Fairphone I’m pretty sure: Fairphone OS (or “Android” how they call it, while /e/OS is also Android…).

For updating /e/OS you would need to check the /e/OS manuals. I don’t use it, I’m afraid I can’t help much there but get you the docs: /e/OS - e Foundation - deGoogled unGoogled smartphone operating systems and online services - your data is your data

Their forum probably has a lot more users who’d know how to help you, but there are a few active users here on /e/OS as well

You are on the community build which suggests you installed /e/OS on your FP5 yourself (which is good because it means your computer should already be equipped for ADB). You will not get any further updates unless you manually upgrade to /e/OS Android 15. I would recommend to do so via the /e/ recovery.

Alternatively, you might want to consider to install anew from scratch and choose the official build – this would give you Android version upgrades (i.e. the major versions) via the Updater in the future. However, these more convenient updates would come with significant delay compared the community build.

EDIT: I see there is actually Android 16 available for the /e/OS community build for the FP5 (as well as the FP4) now. Expect this to arrive in the official build some weeks or months later.

I’ve found the repos for the e/OS build throught ChatGPT (apperently Google has delisted them or is just useless these days)

and downloaded the latest A15 build:

IMG-e-3.6-a15-20260314594305-community-FP5.zip

Than i selected local update but after after a few seconds it cancelnd with “Error while importing the locale update”. I tried a different version: IMG-e-3.1.4-a15-20250915526766-community-FP5.zip
Because it seemed closer to the one I’ve installed (same minor version but A15 instead of A14) therefore I was hoping for more compatibility. Unfortunaly I got the same error. I’m already on the newest version for A14, so it is a problem updating to the next major release, while the minor releases where indeed successfully installed via OTA updates.

Now I’m stuck again. What am I doing wrong?

So it is a known issue to update to a new major release with the community build? I installed it since when I bought the phone the latest official build was still Android 13 which was super outdated even back than. Nothing I can do about it besides reflashing to the offical build and having to backup and restore all data?

Maybe it was a mistake to install e/OS, god damit

If you throw the towel this quickly … :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

For a local update, you need to retrieve update files from https://ota.ecloud.global/api/v1/FP5/community/ (the zip file must start with “e”, not with “IMG”). :red_exclamation_mark:I am not sure (as I usually went through the recovery, not the local update) if you can go straight to the latest version or need to go step by step starting with the one that was released after the last one you got.

That was it! I downloaded the update from that side, installed it manually via local update and it worked without wiping any data. Thank you sooo much :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

Have you arrived at Android 16? It happened to become available in the meantime today! :slightly_smiling_face:

I saw that but didn’t dare to install it since it was so new. I need a stable version more than the newest features.

Not a bad decision. If you aren’t there already, you might also want to follow the https://community.e.foundation for feedback and help.
