I had a… not really unexpected issue of jellyfin transcoding to avc/h.264 instead of av1 when trying to see if av1 works.
Anyway, while I was “debugging” that I found out that the FairPhone 5 don’t have hardware acceleration for some common video codec like vp8 and av1. This is not an issue just wanted to share my findings.
As I see only:
avc/h.264, hevc/h.265, vp9 and mpeg-2
is hardware accelerated
I wonder if this is related to how youtube videos behave on the device. Anyone ever noticed that 4k videos are ever so faintly desaturated compared to 1080p?
And specifically 1080p hdr videos get deep fried colors when you pull down the notification drawer.
Something is funky with the phone’s video decoding for sure.
Though for the longest time I thought it’s a screen hardware issue, due to the not black blacks. But that update didn’t fix this so idk.
