FP4 Idea: create a "dummy" replacement modules for screen and cameras (need design files?)

Hi there.

I would like to fabricate replacement modules for the display and the cameras that include no electronics but only materials that can withstand falls/bumps/etc.

Are there design files (not sure what format would work) anywhere which would describe these two modules that I could use to achieve my goal?

I want to take the cameras and display out and replace them with dummy modules and then use the phone only via voice/usb/ssh/command line.

Thanks!

Hello, the camera modules are swappable, how about you just take them out?
I mean the external cover should work as a protective layer you are after if I am getting you right.

My case has a hole for the cameras. Certainly another case would work.

I can certainly create a case that goes “all around” the device covering the cameras and the screen. Certainly an easier answer!

Sometimes those crazy ideas are funny but in the end a simpler answer is better: make a case that covers! Thanks!

Yeah. I had talked to a local shoe repair shop about making a leather case that encompassed the entire phone so will probably pursue that instead of trying to 3-d print or otherwise fabricate something with nasty plastics/etc. I’ll go natural: cow hide.

Thanks. What I meant was sometimes it is easy to assume cameras are actually included in this part

While they are not, they are purchased separately. So if you do not wish to use them, I guess you can just take them out and check if the phone works without them.

Oh! I see. That IS interesting! Is that for a specific model? I have an FP4 and the spare part seems to include the cameras.

But yes, thanks for replying! I think I’ll pursue the fully enclosed cow-version. I imagine I’ll need to leave some air-holes for ventilation of some sort? Are there any notes around in this forum about cases and that aspect of heat and the device?

Oh my bad, I kinda fell into the assumption you might have FP5 (that’s the setting I described).

I have no insight into the cases construction but in the summer I used a waterproof case- box for the phone and I also use full covers for cycling.

Now the display is on, under the direct heat from sun so I started using the apps to monitor the temperature heat.

I will add links to some of my posts later

Exactly. I looked at Harbor Freight this weekend for water-tight tough boxes and didn’t quite come up with one that was the right size.

I have a smaller version of this: https://www.harborfreight.com/4800-weatherproof-protective-case-x-large-black-64250.html.

I need something though that gives me access to the buttons and allows the speaker/microphone to work ideally when I get more of the software working.

@yvmuell thanks for the FP4 prefix. I see now that would have been helpful for “specificity” though the idea is certainly more general. Cheers!

Fairphone published all files for 3D printing etc.

Cant find it at the moment, should that change I will add it here, maybe you find it by using the search function

I follow up on my promise

  1. the post on waterproof generic cases - it was for FP5 but as you will see it should not matter

comment. I do not recommend the company I bought from due to shipping and customs trouble but the case is really working for me. No button functions though and for calls I need to use BT headset. Plus you cannot switch off the phone and need some kind of solution to wake it up
