FP3 Mic dies periodically

When I try to use an app that requires the mic (record a video, make a video or Merlin to identify a bird song), the mic is often inactive. This is particularly annoying when recording a video, because I don’t see that the sound isn’t being recorded until I want to view the video later. Rebooting is the only way I know to restore the mic, but then, of course, I’ve lost the scene I wanted to film. And the birds have flown.

  • Is there a quick way to check if the mic is there before filming?
  • Is there a simple way to reactivate the mic when it has become inactive?
This is clearly not a hardware problem, because it is intermittent and recoverable by rebooting.

In the quick settings pane (pull down from top), check that the mic is available. You may need to add that tile (pencil icon to edit tiles).

Use an app such as Voice Recorder (org.fossify.voicerecorder available on F-Droid) and very briefly rub top mic (Mic 2) or bottom mic with your finger to see if the mic is responding.

Again, in the quick settings pane, try switching the mic off and on.
