This time it was not the “FAIRPHONE POWERED BY ANDROID” startup screen but something about “windows recovery” (IIRC - I was in no position to take a photo of the screen).

Team Win Recovery Project perhaps? Or in short: TWRP …

TWRP is the recovery program installed on your phone.
Normally you would start it by starting or rebooting the phone with keeping Volume + pressed.

Fortunately the impact of hitting the floor caused the back cover to come off, enabling me to restore normal service by taking the battery out and rebooting the phone.

You can force the phone to reboot by pressing the power button for approx. 15 seconds.
