For a Better Camera on deGoogled Operating Systems

Hi!

For context, I’m considerinf buying a FP 6 and use /e/os. I am also looking for a good camera app since I’ve read multiple threads were people compares FP camera app on android with OpenCamera on /e/os, and that last one was less powerful regarding image quality.

For now, the Fairphone camera app is not available on /e/os, but apparently it could be added soon… or later : FP6 - Camera Issues / Features lost (#8784) · Issues · e / Backlog · GitLab

In this issue on /e/os gitlab it is mentioned that FP camera app is available on /e/os for FP 4 and 5.

By reading this forum thread : Fairphone 5 camera app - Applications - /e/OS community
I’ve realised it was not available two years ago.

So my question is the following: to those who are using FP 4 or 5 with /e/os, how were you able to get FP camera app ? Was it automatic through a system update ? Or available through App lounge ? Or only manually through an APK ?

Thank you for your answers !

I referenced the brief instructions how it works with the FP4/FP5 further above in this topic plus here is a helpful illustration from the /e/ forum:

Hi all,

I’ll try to wrap up what I understood about that. Please tell me if I’m correct or if I’m still missing something.

Fairphone launched the new FPcamera app. It only works on FPOS.

/e/OS succeed to implement it. For people on /e/os there’s an option to activate it.

From /e/ work, Calyx tried to implement it as well. They seems to did it (or were really close to), but because its too much work (especially maintining between updates) they abandoned it.

So now, only official FPOS and /e/Os can use FpCamera app.

Am I right about that ?

Thing I don(t understand is how an open source project like /e/os can succeed but nobody can copy them ?

I personnally tried to extract FPCamera apk from /e/os but of course installation didn’t succeed.

Thanks for your help

Fairphone and Murena have an official partnership in place, perhaps that will help sometimes with things.
