Firefox OS is the way to go!

Hi,
the Fairphone 2 is a great project, not only from the hardware point of view as described here, especially from ethical point of view. The final aim of the project shares many principles with Mozilla. Unfortunately, at the moment the official OS for the Fairphone 2 is Android based and there is also a working progress in order to port Sailfish OS.
What about Firefox OS support? In my opinion, this is a crucial to make the Fairphone 2 really fair.
Thank you

I think i heard someone here in the forum whisper something about Firefox OS. Stay tuned and keep an eye on the blog.

(It will almost certainly be a community effort thought!)

Hi,
I read this thread and I also voted on bugzilla. What can we do in order to facilitate the porting of Firefox OS?

Yeah, really just need to have an option, such as a rom switch when users turn on the device for the first time.

I understand the appealing of android to the masses, so I don’t think outright FFOS would work.

The truth is fairphone is quite expensive, FFOS may well be an important distinguishing factor from Galaxy, Nexus, Moto, LG… etc.

It looks like FirefoxOS builds may soon be available for Fairphone:

I’m proud to announce that a first build of Firefox OS for Fairphone is available https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1139642
Now the problem is that no one of the developers has his own device in order to test the build. So if one of you want to be a beta tester, please go https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1139642 and register himself.
Moreover, the official page of Firefox OS for Fairphone on MDN https://developer.mozilla.org/es/Firefox_OS/Guia_para_desarrollador_de_telefonos_moviles_Boot_to_Gecko_developer/Fairphone has been updated by myself in English and translated in Spanish and in Italian. Unfortunately, I’m not able to add more languages, but it could be very useful to translate this page also in French, German and Portuguese.
We are close to have our first truly fair OS for Fairphone

I’m notifying @Douwe. Maybe he wants to get in touch with the developer community over there.

Thats exciting!!

I would register as a beta tester, but do i need any development skills to be able to test it?

Have you not heard the news? Seems like Firefox OS is the wrong way to go.

Where can I download the OS?

This was a misleading new…

At the moment you have to follow this procedure https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/Firefox_OS/Preparing_for_your_first_B2G_build
I know that it is a little bit complicated for a person that is not a developer.
However, you need Linux or Mac OS X.
The basic steps are
git clone git://github.com/mozilla-b2g/B2G.git && cd B2G // cloning the repository ./config.sh fairphone2 // configuring the build cd B2G ./build.sh -j2 // building 30-60 minutes ./flash.sh // installing the build into the device
Several developers said that they already built the system https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1139642. I’m building it and I will provide a link for download so you can follow only the final step https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Mozilla/Firefox_OS/Installing_on_a_mobile_device

I just installed the Firefox OS launcher - which by the way works a lot better on FP2 than on FP1 - and now I can’t wait to get Firefox OS running on my FP2.
