Fairphone (generation 6) launched 25 June

People were making a lot of noise for a cheaper Fairphone, I guess this is what you then get. A Fairphone 5.5 :stuck_out_tongue:

On paper, it looks like the Fairphone 6 is a downgrade in some ways compared to the Fairphone 5. So it would be good to see some independent reviews on how the Fairphone 6 is doing in real life compared to other current phones. Particularly the cameras.

Anyone?

but its not a review of the real hardware yet

Early adopting didn’t go too well for me in the past… Just ordered anyway (system space is running out on my FP3).
The transition will be slow and careful. I’ll keep my FP3 for special purposes and as a backup.

Why? It’s faster, bigger battery and has a better screen. It’s not a downgrade.

We have this topic here and a blog post from FP, so to not triplicate the discussion I moved your post here

I believe that the image dimensions are totally off. Everywhere it says 156 mm tall and 9.6 thick. All numbers in the image are different so I imagine there was a mistake?

The FP5 is 162 so perhaps they goofed something up there?

I made a new topic on purpose. The other pists above were speculation before the phone was launched. Some of that will have been wrong and of little interest in the future.
Fairphone 6 reviews should be of interest for the lifetime of the FP6.

But ok, hopefully some people will still find my request for reviews.

Many reviews will drop in the forum, thats what always happend and the topic here progressed already based on really official information now available.

Also the adjustable back (cover) is surely a reason.

I do find the modular back quite interesting, but maybe it’s just gimmicky. But great to see some new ideas.
Recently switched from Fairphone 4 to Pixel and GrapheneOS, I’m not about to buy a new phone. Though it will be interesting to see how Fairphone 6 will hold up in regards with software support, battery life and display brightness. Fairphone 4 had problems for a long time with display bugs and random reboots, and a weak display thats hard to see I bright sunlight and battery life. I don’t think that the chip in Fairphone 5 was the most energy efficient either.

The white design looks nice and clean but it might look dirty quick, miss the old green and blue colors.

I hope that the switch feature is upstreamed to the AOSP so any alternative OS:es can utilise it, such as CalyxOS, LineageOS etc.

It looks as if it has just been amended

The 120Hz VRR OLED is exciting.
Everything else, a solid ā€œehhā€. But in a good way. It’s a phone alright.
Surprisingly few images of the phone disassembled. How many modules does it have? Can I take out more than just the battery and screen?
And the external sim and sd card trays are such a weird design choice. I prefer how the fp5 does it with the slots being behind the back cover. No sim tool needed.

Really curious how reviewers feel about the phone.

Isn’t amended on the /e/OS version

They bunged up their youtube video too

Specs don’t seem to be very convincing, I need someone to demonstrate me that…

  1. the main camera makes any difference to the fp5 at taking photos and videos
  2. the old catastrophic microphone was replaced

Also it would be nice if I could turn in my old fp5 and get a giftcard to activate on the new phone, but the fp6 is not yet listed at ā€œWhat can I buy with my giftcardā€

My impression: I think it looks very good. It’s a very ā€œbasicā€ upgrade in a lot of ways, but isn’t that exactly what we should expect from Fairphone?

  • I think the screen looks great, the smaller sizes seems nice
  • The backside looks a lot more luxurious and I think the extra mainstream appeal is worth the extra steps in battery removal
  • I really like the new shade of green
  • The ā€œmomentsā€ zen slider is smart because it might attract people interested in minimalist views of phones, and people who might want a Light Phone
  • The modules look a bit gimmicky but I think it’s a smart, simple integration. The gap in the protective case looks silly though, perhaps you could fill that up instead?
  • The chip looks more mainstream than the FP5’s?

So yes, I think this is promising! The goal of these phones should not be to give you FOMO if you have a FP4 or FP5, but to increase awareness and attract new customers, or upgrading from a FP3.

There should be 12 modular elements, mentioned on the website

I think the external tray is only for the memory card but I am also waiting for detailed pics of internals.

Now we know what sensors are used:
Main camera:

2nd back camera: No info about what sensor was used beside raw specs

Front camera:

  • Samsung (ISOCELL) KD1
  • Same as in Xiaomi 14T Pro, Vivo X100 Pro, Vivo X200 Pro (according to wikipedia)
    • and according to some sites also in the Nothing Phone 3a

As we discussed earlier, it depends hugely on the software, but if you want to know what big brands can do with the sensors, look for reviews of this phones online.

EDIT: Spare part camera modules are sold individually (since FP5). There is a theoretical chance that they get upgraded if they think its worth it.
