Fairphone Camera App - Picture size ratio?

Hi everyone,

The official Fairphone Camera App only allows for 1/1 ; 4/3 or 16/9 picture size ratios.

I wish it would allow for a more traditional 15/10 ratio too.

How could we request it to the app developper?

I’d prefer using the official app, which works well and is full featured on /e/OS, but i’ll take suggestions for other FOSS apps.

Nicolas

Write to the Fairphone support and keep your fingers crossed for the next months/years.

With the bad support situation currently and minor issues having no resolution for months already I doubt that feature requests have a high priority. But if you don’t ask for it the chances are even lower.

Generally, the native aspect ratio of most mobile cameras is 4:3, so taking pictures in 1:1 or 16:9 only ‘crops’ the image and ‘discards’ the remaining parts. That is, you could take the pictures in 4:3 and then crop them to adjust them to the aspect ratio you want, having also the possibility of ‘cropping’ them as you want (there are surely applications to do this in batch).

I say this just as a comment, because many people don’t know that the only thing that the different aspect ratio modes do is ‘ discard’ an area of the image, they don’t widen the angle that the phone picks up. But it’s totally legitimate to want to take the picture directly in that aspect ratio, of course .

Another alternative could be the Open Camera app (F-Droid / Google Play), very configurable, it has: 4:3, 1:1, 16:9, 2:1, 16:5, 8:3, 9:5, 11:9 (but the latter only at lower resolutions). I suppose there are other FOSS camera applications that allow you to choose the aspect ratio. Search for ‘Camera’ in F-Droid in case another one suits your needs better… maybe Fossify Camera, but i didn’t try it.

Just for the record: the default camera app on my FP3 only offers the possibility to take pictures in 4:3 (native), 16:9 and 18:9.
