Hello, I’m also having the same problem with my FR6.
I’ve run several tests:
-connection with multiple USB/USBc cables
-manual connection to the vehicle’s Wi-Fi
-I’ve enabled all possible permissions for Android Auto + rebooted the FR6
-I tried this tutorial: How to setup Android Auto with /e/OS?
But every time I try to start Android Auto from the vehicle’s screen (Suzuki Vitara 2024), it tells me that “a function could not be connected” and then gives me an error 22.
You can currently (eos 3.03)not run Android Auto with /e/os, since the new one needs to be installed as system app. So until e/os installs a stub android auto app, as system app, like evey other custom rom (grapheneos, calyx, iodeos etc.) it wont work.
It seems like the Fairphone 6 is VERY picky about the cable. I found two different phones that work perfectly with a brand new USB A → C cable (required for my car) with which the FP6 fails to connect. I found one single cable at my home that works. Hopefully this is just a software issue that can be fixed…
On almost every journey I made with Android Auto the navigation would work for the entire journey. As soon as I reached my destination and unplugged my phone it would crash and I would be left with a black screen. I assume that the phone had fully crashed and powered off. I would try turn it back on with the power button every few seconds, and it would normally not respond until after ~30 seconds, after which the phone would power on as normal.
Sometimes the phone would crash and power off immediately after unplugging, other times a popup would show saying “System UI not responding”, and when I tapped the “Close application” button the phone would crash and power off.
Sometimes mid journey the Android Auto UI would disappear. It would change from the split screen view which shows your music and the map, to just the map on full screen. The bottom bar with the buttons to switch apps or re-enter split screen would not be visible. When this happened the navigation was still working. If I tried to disconnect and reconnect the phone it would crash and power off as soon as I unplugged it, as described above.
All these were seen with a 2017 Skoda Fabia.
As well as these consistent Android Auto crashes I was seeing occasional random crashes while using my Fairphone normally. I reported this all to Fairphone support, who said they would replace the phone. I sent the phone to them for replacement, but I received the exact same phone back (with the same IMEI) with a note saying “No fault found”.
Since then I have factory reset the phone, and only installed the bare minimum apps I need. so far I have not seen any more crashes (while using normally or while using Android Auto). I am slowly adding more and more apps to see if any in particular trigger the crashing issues again.
Thanks for sharing your experience. I think I get the System UI not responding issue and the Android Auto crashing once I drive into a non-network signal area. The phone restarts by itself most of the times after a couple of minutes without needing to press the “on” button for 30 seconds. I was hoping that the last update from Fairphone, that I downloaded today would have sorted it out, but it didn´t.
I haven´t done a factory reset yet. I find it strange that it´s an app causing the problem when it only happens when I lose signal (I think).
I´m waiting for a reply from Fairphone to my problem. I contacted them a couple of days ago.
Still waiting (since July) for a reply from them about my Fairphone 4, when it was losing signal constantly and crashing while having 2 SIM cards active at the same time. I decided to upgrade to the Fairphone Gen6 to find myself dealing with a different issue…
I have connected my Fair phone 6 to my computer with a USB cable. In USB setting I can select data transfer. So cable is ok. Now I connect in my car but now in USB settings the data transfer is greyed out. What can I do to resolve?
I moved your post here as this has been a recent issue for more people. You might want to read a bit here, perhaps something helps in your situation as well. Ideally also report the issue to support.fairphone.com with a detailed description of the circumstances.
I’m seriously considering FP6 to replace my current Nothing Phone 1, and to that end I would like hear about the status of Android Auto support in FP6 stock OS. Android Auto is really important for me, especially the Google Maps navigation and unfortunately it’s a deal breaker for me if it doesn’t work.
I skimmed through this thread but unfortunately am unable to form a clear picture. It seems there might be car dependent issues and issues related to whether the phone is connected with USB or BT (to the car).
So I would like to know if anyone can confirm Android Auto works on FP6 stock OS with a 2017 model VW connected via USB?
I have the same problem: I tried several cables, then bought a cable specifically designed for Android Auto and high transfer rates (20 Gbps), but nothing helped. The Fairphone 6 says it’s connected every time, but my Skoda Kamiq doesn’t recognise the connection. However, since several other mobile phones could be connected to the Kamiq even with simple cables, it’s not the Kamiq’s fault, but the Fairphone’s. It also seems very unlikely to me that it’s due to a slow cable, since the Fairphone 6 can only handle USB 2.0 speeds.
My solution was the wireless CarPlay & Android Auto adapter from Carlinkit (approx. 30€).
In my opinion, the Fairphone 6 is already about 100€ more expensive than technically equivalent mobile phones. I was happy to pay that extra for sustainability. Now I have to pay another 30€. Annoying. My story with the Fairphone is off to a bad start.
Did you enable the Eco charge option in the charging mode setting? For me, making it fast charge again (and disabling battery protect) solved my issues with Android Auto.
For me, with the Fairphone Gen 6 the android auto experience can be described at “Predictably unreliable”. Meaning is sometimes works great, other times not at all. I Android Auto is very important to you, i would not recommend buying a Fairphone.
