Hey there, I bought a Shift6mq a few months ago. Now I considered buying a FP5 and did so, since the camera seemed to be much better. The camera is indeed better in general (while sometimes it seems like some “clever algorithm” do stuff for things out of focus, where the Shift6mq would keep details… anyway …). Also the display is brighter and quite clear, while the Shift6mq has some kind of very slight noisy pattern for plain colors.
Now I face some things, which just still annoy me a bit and somehow I would like to hear some voices from this community:
Some minor things I probably could get used to
The bumper does not fit that perfect as the bumper for the Shift6mq
Screen is bigger and device is a little thicker
The screen is way more rounded in the corners. Even that much that while I rooted the device there was a bit text hidden behind the rounded corners … I still don’t get how this is the trend, unfortunately. Like if people do want to have big egg screens in the future … sigh.
Now there are some things, which might be software related and I am not sure:
Double tap the screen when devices is locked (I only activated swipe lock) sometimes does not work.
With Nova Launcher there is the option to pinch zoom in or out to do a certain action. I linked it to start two apps (either with in or out). On the Shift6mq this works quite well, but on the FP5 this almost never works.
The battery lasts not as long as the Shift6mq, since it seem to need more volt to work (Shift6mq has 3800mAh, while the FP5 has 4200mAh, but the latter one seem to use around 4,2V while the Shift6mq only uses 3,7V or similar. These are numbers I got through the app BatteryBot; so not sure how accurate the numbers are. After all the systems battery settings tell me that it lasts not as long as my Shift6mq.
The Shfit6mq has the feature to enable / disable flash light by holding the power button. This is really handy. Not sure if this is achievable by software (e.g. with the root privileges somehow?).
I tend a tiny bit to stick to the FP5, but still I am not sure, if this might be a bad decision on the long run. Otherwise I would try to sell my FP5 again. I am just totally lost at the moment and heavily annoyed that I was (personally) not able to spend more time testing the FP5 before coming to a conclusion. Now I have too very expensive phones, which I cannot return other then trying to sell them privately …
Looking forward to some thought from the community. Maybe I can get a broader perspective on all this …? Thanks for any reply!
Before the conversation switches to some other language;-) let me add that Shiftphone has this policy in place that you could pay extra for shitf6 and then upgrade it for Shift8 once it become available. At least this is how I understood it.
If you purchased that, I would suggest swapping as selling Shift6 running an outdated OS might be difficult. Was the upgrade to Android 14 for shift6 not in the books though? Any chance you get this upgrade?
I like to keep the conversation in english, hoping that it will reach more people after all. But thanks for the info.
The thing is that I am not interested in an even bigger phone. Shift8 will be at 6,67’‘, while the FP5 is at 6,46’’ already and the Shift6mq is at 6’’ only. I can barely hold those phones in my hand … and I have big hands. But still thanks for the reminder and the idea.
Thanks for the reminder. It seems like Shift now offers Android 13 for the Shift6mq! But it would need a full reset, as it seems (I did not root the Shift, so maybe this would be an opportunity to do so, if I would keep this one in the end). I am yet not sure, if I should update it. I am not sure if this could improve the camera, for example … since this is at the moment the main issue I have with the Shift6mq and that’s why I bought a FP5.
Maybe I will do the Android 13 update and see if this might give me a reference I can base further decisions on. What a pitty that on both devices it seems like little minor things on the on hand (pinch issue on FP5) and slightly bigger things on the other (bad cam on Shift and FP5 too big, for example).
There should be release notes, pic quality would need improvement in the camera software, only Android 13 will not help. At the moment with ShoftOs 5 even worse, several features not working/implemented
Die Funktionalität der Kamera-App ist eingeschränkt
Folgende Funktionen sind noch nicht implementiert:
Bokeh (Portrait)
HDR
Low-Light (Modus für schwache Lichtverhältnisse)
All Infos here about first Android 13 based ShiftOS
I was on that linked page yesterday, but I did not read all. Thanks for the quote! This sounds rather bad … (for english readers, the quote says that the features of the camera are limited with the new ShiftOS 5; e.g. portrait mode, HDR and low-light aren’t implemented yet).
Since I could not make it to test the FP5 in time, I would have to sell it privately anyway. I am considering just switching to it, testing it in all-day situations for some weeks and see if I would miss things from the Shift.
As far as I know: There are different battery types available, but for mobile phones the default is lithium-ion and there the voltage doesn’t differ that much. There are things like “nominal cell voltage” or “end of charging voltage”.
Are you in the wrong thread? The question was about an update for the Shift6mq, this phone was compared to the FP5, so /e/OS or the FP3 were not meant at all.
I wanted to point out that; if one phone does not have the latest Android version it is not a make or break selling point at least for the FairPhone, Shift or Terracube they can all be kept up to date with 3rd party suppliers. Even the Grandfather from the FP5 can run the latest Android version.
My initial problem is not with the OS after all, though. It’s like the size of the product, the round corners, the tap “problem” (which all rather seem hardware related anyway). But still thanks for your urge to help and the information!
Update: I am still testing the Fairphone 5 in all day situations. So far it feels quite nice. It’s nice that it’s a bit faster than the Shift. I just think that I feel it at least. Not sure if it also could be an OS issue. Still going on testing further the next days.
But we were talking about manufacturer support and Google certification. A community made version update might give you a higher version number, but ain’t a full update. Even Fairphone is struggling with the updates, if the hardware drivers are missing for example.
