Fairphone 5 USB C port not working with DAC 3.5 headphones adapter

Hello everyone!

I’ve had a Fairphone 5 since May of this year. So far, I’ve been suitably impressed with it’s overall functionality and performance.

I’ve had the same issues I’ve seen some of you have had - from the off, the battery died during my iPhone to Android transfer. Many things got ‘lost in the fire’.

All in all, I think it’s a decent, affordable alternative to the big names.

But, I have had a multitude of issues with DAC 3.5 headphone adapters, when used with headphones in the USB C port. Mainly, the connectivity is awful if you move your body while having the phone in your pocket. Audio is basically unlistenable via the USB C port - DAC 3.5 headphone jack.

I’ve contacted Fairphone and explained the situation. After a fair bit of back & forth and confusion from their end. They have proposed I send the phone back to them for diagnosis. I had requested a replacement USB C port be sent out. They were unwilling, purely based on my say so. Which is fair enough. But I don’t particularly want to be without my phone for what would be over a week.

Have any of you experienced something similar and if so, how did you resolve it?

I saw some people having similar issues with a FP4, where they said you can make adjustments to the USB port from Settings, which I have attempted to no avail - none of the USB settings could be adjusted on my phone. I found the settings, but they were all ‘greyed out’ Possibly a fault as well?

Anywho, that was way longer than I intended. If you’ve read this far, thank you.

Maybe: Many DACs switch off if no headphones are detected. If the jack plug is “dirty”, this causes dropouts and crackling noises.

Hello @jeffdibbs and welcome to the forum.
More of the maybe…have you tried a FP adapter?
I have a previous version - they recently started selling an updated one, and it generally works for listening to the music. There have been some complaints about the voice recording at least for some apps.
As a disclaimer, now I am using mostly BT connection and I rarely move a lot with a wired set but I don’t recall any issues.

Hi Meaghan,

Thanks!

No, I haven’t tried a FP adapter. Interesting suggestion. I wonder why they haven’t suggested me trying one of their own adapters too?

I’m weird and don’t want to compress the music any further, via BT and I have enough things I have to charge as it is!

But I totally understand the flaw with my thought process.

Thank you for the suggestion of the FP adapter. I’ll check it out.

I tried cleaning it. No dice.

Decided to just buy a new USB port.

I definitely won’t be buying another Fairphone after this.

Terrible customer service and cheaply made components. Yes you can replace them. But is it cost effective to keep replacing cheap parts, ad nauseam?

May as well shell out for a ‘proper phone’ and just have insurance.

This is not a good, or fair phone at all…

In 8 years with Fairphones I once replaced a bottom module…

If you have no issues with charging, I doubt it’s an issue with an USB port. If buying, why don’t you add an adapter to a basket, then you can return whatever accessory you don’t need within cool-it-off period.

There was no adapters in their ‘shop’…

Otherwise, I would have bought one as well.

Sorrry, are we talking about the same thing?

Thank you Meaghan.

I couldn’t find it when I looked.

Have ordered one now.

As far as my experience goes with USB-C DACs, I found out that if I leave it hanging it won’t matter how big the brand is that made the phone, it will loose contact after time. I have used Dense Audio Adapt Reference, Fiio KA1, AkLiam PD4 Plus, Simgot DEW5, Onix Alpha X1. Some had issues from the start because their connector was loose more than the other.
