Hi,
My Fairphone has started charging in a very strange way. At first I thought it was the charging cable - it wasn’t charging at all, unless I held the phone and charger in a particular way, holding the lead upwards. I checked 3 other chargers and they’re all doing the same. Since doing this, it will only charge slowly too.
I’ve tried the following things:
*Cleaning the port but that didn’t make any difference.
*I tried to do a check via the app but it didn’t show anything obvious. It says to only do it if instructed by FP.
Could it be the battery as it’s over 2 years old? There are no other signs of this being an issue though. No other faults. Storage and other functions all come up healthy.
Tips and advice welcome. I’ve sent FP a message but they take days to get back and I don’t find them particularly helpful.
This strongly sounds like there is indeed an issue with the USB port itself. You might want to unscrew the loudspeaker block in the phone that plays a part in holding the USB port in position, and might want to especially check the one screw that is in the USB port part itself, see here:
Just to avoid confusion, I am not suggesting to replace the port right away. But the instructions by iFixit allow you to check on the existing port for now.
You can contact Fairphone by Live Chat.
Business hours: Mon, Tue, Thur, Fri: 10:00-13:00
You can find the live chat at the bottom of this page.
So from my own experience I can say they are very helpful on the chat.
Great thanks. I now need to locate the little screwdriver they sent as I’ve never actually opened up the phone or done anything with it ;-). Is it easy enough?
Hello Tamsines
Welcome to the FP Forum.
I hope you are warm and well.
I had a similar issue with charging my FP4, so please search to see my messages of September 21st and October 15th.
Best wishes
Andrew
Hi @AndrewM
Thanks for getting in touch. I have contacted them and they’ve asked me to send the phone to them so let’s see what they can do.
I’ve now got to find a replacement phone for 2 weeks.
Best wishes
Tamsine
I was fortunate that I had kept my old FP2, which I use only for the daily alarm since the software updates ended. I was able to maintain online and telephone contact for approximately 1-2 weeks until the replacement USB port was delivered.
