Fairbuds: my wishlist

Introduction

Hello everyone,

I am a proud FP5 user (had my first anniversary not that long ago) and I could label myself as an audiophile.
I have noticed that many people in my life were buying “true wireless” earbuds. I have never had those because their single-use image repulsed me.
However FP5 has no audio jack and sometimes I miss the simple plug’n’play audio experience so I have decided to buy the fairbuds.

Wishes

In this post I would like to present my three wishes regarding the fairbuds to the community.

Losless audio

I bought them for the convenience and longevity, not for audio quality.
However I am disappointed – I do not like listening to music on them.
They are alright for podcasts, social media and all that stuff, but not for music :frowning:.
Maybe that is because I have not used lossy bluetooth audio gear for multiple years.

I have read that the hardware can support LDAC.
I know it’s a proprietary codec, like AptX and it can be a cost to use them, but why not use LC3?
If the hardware can use only lossy codecs, it will never shine. Why don’t let it?

If you wish to have lossless audio in your fairbuds, let the company see that!
I remember reading that they might add it if enough people want it.

Gain levels

If I am to listen to some music before I go to bed, the volume’s either at 0 or 1/15 of the max volume. This is too loud for me :frowning:.

I would love to have a way of controlling the volume of the earbuds in the app.
Best in class would be a pregain slider with 24dB range, but I know it’s a lot to ask.
Just a simple preset of three levels would be good and I think it would benefit everyone!
How many people need to use the 1/15 and 14/15 volume levels during the same day?

A FOSS app

Why I think it’s worth it:

  • distribution on F-Droid – giving users a choice to avoid using google play is always a good thing
  • open source – the app is barebones now. The community could improve it! Just take a look what PineTime achieved
  • it’s within the “Fair” ethos – Free software is the only software that’s fair and I think it fits the company values

Outro

Do you care about the stuff I brought up?
What do you think about it?
