eSIM / pennymobil (Germany)

Hi all,

1st post, got my Fairphone 5 today

And I directly have a question reg. eSIM:

I’ve read the docs about using an eSIM with a Fairphone 5, in general. For this, a QR code is required.

My German provider, “pennymobil” (which is in fact CONGSTAR, which is legally a brand of Deutsche Telekom) offers NO QR-Code, activating an eSIM has to be done via their App. That’s why they officially only support a couple of Samsungs and iPhones (Häufige Fragen und Antworten | Penny Mobil - “Mit welchen Endgeräten kann ich eine eSIM verwenden?”).

But I guess or hope that this list is not exclusive. That they just have tested with a selection of widespreadly used devices.

Has anyone already tested if this “App activating” works for Fairphones also? Are other providers doing similar things like pennymobil?

FYI I’m currently using a “classical SIM” im my current smartphone. Of course I can use it in my new Fairphone. And I can switch to an eSIM free of charge. But not back to a physical SIM, if eSIM does not work - as they’re stating “not working/approved” before.

If nobody here has tested, I’ll stay with the physical SIM. And wait for the next “special offer starter package”, in the past they usually offered something like pay 10€ / get 10€ prepaid credits.

Regards,
Michael

First of all: Welcome to the forum! :tada:

I’ve done kind of a hack with fraenk, which is also a brand by Congstar:
If you chat with their support staff and tell them that you want to activate eSIM on your Pixel device (I chose to tell them that I got a Pixel 4 5G) which can’t be done via the app, they will manually activate eSIM for you, which worked and still works great for me.
